Are there any gay films with a happy ending?

SHORTBUS - It's more of a polysexual film than a 'gay' one, but the ending isn't just happy, it's downright ORGASMIC!

BIG EDEN - Okay, so the whole thing is kind of a "Midwestern fairy tale", but endings don't come much sweeter than this, where the guy gets the guy and they do live "happily ever after."

ALL OVER THE GUY - At the very least, if the ending isn't jump-up-and-down happy, I'd say it's hopeful.

trick - Same with this one.

PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT - And this one!

JEFFREY - Though I find the lead character to be completely annoying, he and his man do make a great couple at the end, although they face an uncertain future.

BEDROOMS AND HALLWAYS - I like this movie a lot, because the 'happy ending' is so unexpected...the people who end up together are not the ones you expected to, but it all still works out.

COTE D'AZURE - It is one of those silly French sex romps, but at the end, the family that "plays together" really does stay together! And it's a musical! (Of sorts.)

ADAM AND STEVE - After what they go through together, it's nice to know that their love finally triumphs over all.

THIRD MAN OUT and A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM - Both are murder mysteries, so things get pretty rough for both gay and straight characters. What makes the endings to both movies happy is that hunky P.I. Donald Strachey always goes home to his loving husband, Timmy.

Oh, yeah, and I just had to agree with something another poster said - 'mainstream' movies with gay themes rarely ever turn out with happy endings. So if you'd rather have that, gay independent films are a lot better, though the quality seems to vary. There's a lot of really, really, REALLY BAD gay cinema out there. But it's still worth picking through all the lumps of coal to find a few diamonds.

Do Americans and other Europeans watch Italian and/or French movies?

I don't know about what Europeans watch. Most Americans do not watch French and/or Italian films.  Very few are even shown in most American theaters (some are shown in "Arthouse" theaters). I think there is, however, a significant number of movie enthusiasts who do, and they can watch these movies online on, for example, Netflix.  Also, once a movie wins an award, naturally, more people tend to watch it, especially an Academy Award.  For example, Brie Larson won best actress for "Room" this year, and I'm sure it's prompting people to take a look.I know "Room" is Irish, but it is an example of a foreign film that is garnering attention.Horror enthusiasts are particularly interested in the French "New Wave" of horror (e.g. "Frontiers.")I like movies that explore different topics and push boundaries.   I am tired of the steady American theater diet of superheroes and robots blowing things up, and sequel after sequel of whatever worked the first time they did it.So, in order to do so, I watch a lot of American independent films and a lot of foreign films, including French and Italian (but more French movies seem to be available and of interest to me).

What are the major differences between European and American cinema?

The main difference, when referring to the ‘studio’ system of American cinema, vs. European cinema are many and varied. I point out the studio system, because the American ‘indie’ film scene is very large and successful, and often has many auteur directors with what we refer to as having European sensibilities. With that said, the main differences between The American Studio System and European Cinema are as follows;American cinema generally has big action, and typically CUTS on action.European films—particularly ‘French’ films, have less action, and more drama, more dialogue, and typically do NOT cut on action.Studio System films tend to have bigger budgets, big special effects, more fx make up, and major, world famous blockbuster stars. European films are often lower budget, have less special effects, less fx make up, and often have no major stars, or stars that are only well known in their specific country of origin.European films often are slower paced, focused more on dialogue rather than big action, and often reference philosophy, fine art, poetry, culture, or political theory more, whereas American film does this far less.European cinema is often influenced heavily by German Expressionism and the French New Wave, whereas The Studio Systems’ proclivities in regard to these aesthetic choices often fall in to the more obscure genre category of what is referred to as Films Noir.European films also tend to have more sensuality and nudity (particularly French and Sweedish), yet not as a device for shock, but art and aesthetics, whereas Studio System films tend to have sex and nudity more for shocking or gratuitous reasons.Without expounding further due to lack of time, these are some of the basic differences. To learn more, simply find out yourself by watching and observing films from both areas, and be sure to check out some of my favorite European auteur directors if you have not, including; Jean Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, Alain Resnais, Krzysztof Kieślowski, and Federico Fellini, among many more.the Official Bruce Edwin WebsitePublisher, http://www.HollywoodSentinel.com

Why do they say "fin" and not "finish" at the end of some films? Where'd it come from?

“Fin” is French for “End”. The earliest motion pictures were French, and a few films from other countries during the next couple of decades used “Fin” in order to imitate them, it eventually became the standard custom for a while. Nowadays, it’s mostly done in order to sound retro, nostalgic, or deliberately dated (depending on the film), especially with films set in and around the era where use of the custom was most common.

What are the saddest French movies?

The worst prison is the death of one's child.Photo from rottentomatoes.com[1]It's true. This film is a proof.Il y a longtemps que je t'aime (I’ve Loved You For So Long) is one of the saddest French films that I can remember. It's truly hard to forget good films such as this one.I've Loved You So Long is a 2008 French-Canadian drama film written and directed by Philippe Claudel. It tells the story of a woman struggling to interact with her family and find her place in society after spending fifteen years in prison.[2]It’s a film directed by French film director, screenwriter, and novelist, Philippe Claudel. He has already received several awards such as the France Télévision and Goncourt Awards for his literary works. This film has won the BAFTA Award for Best Film in 2008.[3]I’ve Loved You For So Long is truly a masterpiece of Claudel. It’s a well written film that tells a story of Juliette, played by Kristin Scott Thomas, who was convicted for murdering her own 6-year-old son, Pierre. The slow pacing of the storytelling has also added beauty to this remarkable movie. There’s a depth of sorrow throughout the film. Sadness and guilt were conveyed emotions visible in every facial expression of the lead actress, Kristin Scott Thomas. She has truly given a superb performance in this movie.Elsa Zylberstein plays Juliette’s sister, Léa. How both characters, Léa and Juliette reconnect with each other after a long time of seperation, is something to look forward.Photo by Thierry Valletoux/Sony Pictures ClassicsAs the movie progress, it shows how Juliette struggles in her new life living with her sister and her family. The last scene is a revelation. A beautifully crafted scene that will haunt every viewer. It will never leave you. It’s one of the movies that made me cty.Footnotes[1] I've Loved You So Long[2] I've Loved You So Long - Wikipedia[3] Philippe Claudel introduces his debut film in HCMC

Good Drama/Romance movies?

I am looking for Drama/Romance movies where the couple cannot be together.
It can be any genre, as long as the acting is good.
Along the lines of:
> Atonement
> The Notebook
> One Day
> Becoming Jane
> Memoirs of a Geisha
> Beyond Borders

I have watched A LOT of movies, so please try and surprise me.
I will give a best answer and I favour those that take the time to give me long lists.

Many thanks :)
