Why Are Child Soldiers A Social Injustice?
Kidnapping a child, brutalizing them and forcing them to be a soldier is generally not considered a social justice. Most child soldiers are not volunteers.
What choices do people make in the face of injustice?
Politicians that don't listen and pass on your views and intentions. Laws that prevent people from doing things such as spontaneously mowing someone else's lawn as a favour (You could be done for trespassing) and looking after someone else's children without being 'checked' (child safety). The person personally though I would say laziness or standing out of the crowd. Benefits and being awarded will naturally encourage people, as they are getting something out of it. Also peer pressure can press someone into doing something. This sounds like a rant about politics, doesn't it? I didn't intend it to be...
Groups that face injustice today?
Interesting topic. Most of the people who scream the loudest that they are being oppressed are full of hot air. For one, they usually have either a financial or political motivation for their complaining; The louder they yell, the more political favors or welfare money they get. For another, they may simply be demanding attention because they know they can get it. We call that being a "drama queen" around here. For Blacks, (I refuse to use hyphenated American labels) you have people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who make a lot of money and gain a lot of power by perpetuating a victim status among their groups. For homosexuals, it is mostly about acceptance and political favors. Most people don't care what they do in the privacy of their own homes, but they want more than passive acceptance; They want people to pat them on the back and say "Good for you!" In other words, they do not want the same basic liberties as anybody else. They already have those. They want to be treated as "special." If you want people who are truly oppressed, try looking at real Africans, particularly African slaves. Slavery is alive and well in places like Sudan. Compared to these people, the whiniest of Americans lives like a king.
Some examples of social injustice for kids?
The education system. When I was 11 we had a system which did two things: The primary schools actually taught us some useful skills - to read and write fluently, to be secure and rapid in simple maths. The teaching and learning did not end there; we also ead history and geography, studied science and did PE/games. Then (remember that people like me from unprosperous homes actually stood an even chance after our excellently-taught primary years) we sat a competitive exam (the 11+) for entry to some truly excellent state secondaries - the grammar schools. The result? The private sector was withering. Except for a few of the top schools, the rest of the independents found that barristers, doctors, executives would not pay fees for what their children could have free, and locally. When I won a scholarship to Cambridge I found that almost all the other award-holders came from backgrounds like mine. There were, it is true, a few pathetic remnants in the Pitt Club, but mostly state schools ruled. The college eight I rowed in did not have a single man from a public school in it. The system we now have could not have been better designed to keep out working-class talent if it had been done on purpose. The primaries do not seriously even pretend to teach, so that children learn more at home than at school - and what they learn depends on the educational level and social class of their parents. Then the comprehensives are no better. The ethos in them limits, not expands, the horizons of the children. And we wonder why poor children do not succeed. Get the schools right, get some teachers who actually want to do the job we pay them for, and all else will fall into place.
