Is 187 A Good Psat Score For A Sophomore

What is a good PSAT score for a sophomore? How can you study to improve your score?

If you are talking about the new PSAT then in my opinion anything about a 1200 is amazing for a sophomore. In order to improve my score what I did was religiously studied an hour everyday. It's only an hour however if you put your full effort into that one hour then you will start to see results and on top of that I did it EVERYDAY.

Is 187 a good PSAT score for a sophomore?

I took the PSAT once before in freshman year, and I got a 164. This year I got a 63 critical reading, 64 math, and 60 writing skills. I only took the PSAT practice test that came with the book. Next year, I want to be a National Merit Scholar. Is it realistic to improve my score to a 223 or higher for the cutoff next year for California? What can I do the improve it?

Is a 1320 on the PSAT good for a sophomore?

Yes, a 1320 is a good PSAT score. But no one cares about what your PSAT score is unless it is A LOT higher than that. So stop worrying and just do your best in the toughest courses you can handle. The rest will take care of itself.

What is a good PSAT score for a sophomore? How can I improve both my SAT and PSAT scores by the beginning of my junior year?

I have a blog post and video that go through everything in depth — there’s a concordance table so you can see ACT vs. SAT vs. PSAT score— but in short:DECENT PSAT SCORE:A decent score meets the benchmark for the College Board (75% chance you won’t flunk out of any classes freshman year of college)– that lands typically at about the 50th percentile on these tests. For the PSAT that’s a 970 for juniors (510 Math / 460 Verbal) and a 910 for sophomores (480 Math / 430 Verbal). This kind of a score will get you into some four year colleges.A GOOD PSAT SCORE:A good score on the PSAT would equate to around a 1200 on the SAT– enough to get you into nationally recognized state universities (at least the less competitive ones) with moderately competitive admissions (40-70% of applicants accepted– ballpark). This equates to approximately the 75th percentile on the PSAT: 1150 for juniors or a 1050 for sophomores.A VERY GOOD PSAT SCORE:A very good score on the PSAT would equate to around a 1400 on the SAT– enough to get you into a top 50 or competitive admissions school with admission rates in the 20-40% range — again this is ballpark. This is about the 95th percentile, or a 1350 on the PSAT for juniors or 1250 for sophomores.AN EXCELLENT SCORE:An excellent PSAT score would be in the top 1% of test takers, enough to be commensurate with at least a 1500-1550 SAT score. On the PSAT this would be between a 1460-1520 as a junior (or 1360+ as a sophomore). The upper range of this score band is enough to complete a strong application to top 10 or top 20 schools, with admission rates below 20%.What's a Good PSAT Score? Sophomore SAT Scores?

Remember that most schools don't even look at the writing or essay scores. So, right now, you're sitting at a 1150. (This is very much above average for a sophomore, since they scale the combined SAT scores to be about 1,000 for the average graduating senior.)

I'd like to second the advise of someone earlier: DON'T waste your money on Sylvan. As someone that used to do their SAT prepatory programs myself, I can assure you they're not worth the 800-1000 dollars they're trying to bilk you out of. All they do is make you practice math problems and memorize lists of words ... which you can very well do on your own.

The first time I look the SAT was as a junior, and got a score comparable to yours. A month later, I re-took it and got a 1250 (this was in the ancient days when they didn't have an essay or writing section, so the 1250 was just math + critical reading.) When I was interested in getting into graduate school, I took the GRE (which is EXACTLY like the old SAT in format), I got a 1430 (again, math + critical reading.) So, the challenging material that I experienced in college really did a lot for my score. I suggest you do the same thing. I don't know what they have at your school, but take all the IB, honors, GT classes you possibly can - without completely stressing yourself out.

And READ GOOD NOVELS. And non-fiction books. I know that's easier said than done when you're in high school, and it seems like you never have any down-time. But do it on the weekends, vacation ... it will do WONDERS for your comprehension and vocabulary-building.

Hope this helps!

Is this a good PSAT score?

That's a great score, especially considering your age! Your score will really improve over time, and when you take the test again as a junior to qualify for the national merit scholarship program, you will do exceptionally well! I got a 187 as a sophomore (age 15) and as a junior I received a 209. Your PSAT score also correlates fairly directly with your SAT score, so as a 13 year old, you would get a 1800 on the SAT, which is a full 300 points above the national average for college bound juniors, so you are in great shape! Congrats!

Is a 1200 on the PSAT as a Sophomore good, with a 680 in Reading/Writing, and a 520 in Math? Should I start prepping now to improve my score?

As others have said, you should start by improving your math score. However, I would suggest focusing on Algebra I and II as Geometry and Trig make up less than 10% of the PSAT math. There is also a new focus with the revamped PSAT on data analysis so make sure you study things like reading graphs and probability. If you want to improve, the best way (in my opinion) is to take practice tests under timed conditions then grade yourself. I would suggest taking the practice SAT (not the PSAT) because it's slightly harder and there are more of them available for you to practice. The college board has practice tests available on their website as well as answer explanations. You can find them here: SAT Practice Tests. Make sure to keep a record of which questions you miss so you can study those concepts in more depth. Message me if you want more advice on how to best study for the PSAT.

Is a PSAT score of 1230 good for a sophomore aspiring to be an engineering student at CMU?

Remember that your PSAT Score does not directly determine your admission probability to Carnegie Mellon University. You will need to submit your SAT score to the university, in addition to your extracurricular activities. The average SAT score at CMU is 1490, which could be attainable for you if you prepare and study for the SAT.Best of luck!

How much does your SAT score typically rise between sophomore and junior year?

The College Board has not released this specific data for the New SAT for the same students from year to year from sophomore to junior year on the SAT (the tests aren't even scored yet!), but you can look at percentile differences on the current PSAT between sophomores and juniors to get an idea:The PSAT Scoring Scale As you can see there's a "natural rise" in percentile of about 20-40 points per section from sophomore to junior year (if you believe that the kid in the 70th percentile on the test sophomore year will also be in the 70th percentile junior year, etc.).  In other words, to be in the 99th percentile as a junior you'll need about 30 more points per section than as a sophomore.  From my own anecdotal evidence as a tutor I find this to be a credible estimate.  Now you have to consider that some students do SAT prep in between, which could explain this rise, but most students who take the exam do not.  But the other thing to consider is that more juniors take the PSAT than sophomores, and sophomores who do take the exam tend to be at high schools with higher percentages of college bound students.  As such, these forces may somewhat counteract each other.  At the same time, these situations may muddy the accuracy of such speculation-- 30 points per section may be a low estimate for students at competitive high schools, and a high estimate for those who are not, a high estimate for those who don't prep, etc.You can also consider the score increases that seniors see:https://secure-media.collegeboar... On any given sitting though, your personal score may go up or down.  As the margin of error on these tests is ~30 points per section according to College Board metrics, you can see how increasing your score over a one year period as an individual student is certainly not guaranteed. The other thing to keep in mind is that the PSAT has fewer points available than an SAT-- you might expect a 30-40 point rise per section for your SAT score from your PSAT score because of that fact.  I can't speak for certain as the new test hasn't been fully rolled out yet.

Is getting an 1170 on the 2017 PSAT a good score? I'm a sophomore in high school, and this is my first time taking it.

When I first took the PSAT as a sophomore, I got a 1330. My friend got a 970. Fast forward one year, and friend just got a 1550 on SAT, while I got a 1510. You PSAT score as a sophomore does not affect you in any way. It is simply a learning experience for students to know how the SAT test looks like. A 1170 PSAT score is quite good, better than my friend for sure. Look at the mistakes you have done on the test and I promise that you will do better next time. You are a sophomore, so you still have time to prepare. Good luck!
