Is A Hang Drum/pan Drum Worth The Money

Where can I buy a hang drum in India?

You can now find Hang Drums at any big music store in India. I found one in Bhargava's Musical (Daryaganj, Chandni Chowk, Delhi). This means it'll now be available at Furtados (Mumbai) too. You can even find it on Bajaao - http://www.bajaao.com/collections/hapi-drums

How hard is it to learn hang drum?

The Hang or Handpan is relatively easy to play. Every Hang/Handpan is different in such that they come in different scales ranging from anywhere between 7 to 15 notes. The way the notes are arranged around the instrument is from lowest to highest alternating from left to right or right to left side of the instrument, this is the case if the lowest note on the instrument is placed directly in front of you.  This makes it very difficult to play a note that doesn't go along with the previous note you played or the one that you will play after that. Of course there are exceptions but in general its a very intuitive instrument and it wont take very much practice to figure it out without any instruction or previous musical experience. It does help to have some music knowledge and an understanding of rhythm and will certainly fast track you through the learning curve, however even lacking any music background, all you need is a gentle touch a decent ear and you will be making beautiful music in minutes. There are also learning DVD resources as well as free tutorials on you tube from beginner to advanced tips and tricks. Now obtaining a Hang or Handpan is no small feat - you can read my answer to a related question here. Good luck to you if you decide to take on this amazing instrument!

What is a hang drum?

A hang drum is a metal percussion instrument similar to the South American steel pan drum. Steel pan drums are made from the end caps of discarded oil barrels whereas the hang drum was developed in Switzerland, using more sophisticated materials. Perhaps we could call it a kind of second generation steel pan drum. Both use similar principles for creating musical tones, however the steel pan is traditionally played using mallets and the hang drum is normally played with fingers. The hang drum is sometimes called the “space drum,” and I might mention that aficionados call it simply a “hang.”Here’s a video clip:

How does the Hang music drum work?

Basically, vibrating steel and air make it work. Its primary sound is made by striking one or more of its tone fields (acoustic membranes). The tone fields vibrate, producing sound. Not only do the tone fields vibrate as acoustic membranes, but the instrument also vibrates as a whole and acts as a Helmholtz resonator. You can learn more about this fascinating instrument here: Handpan / Hang | A Category of Articles by AoxoA

What is the difference between hang drum and space drum?

The term Hang drum is actually a misnomer usually used to describe Handpans.Louis is right, The Hang is no longer in production, so if you’d like to get an instrument similar to the original Hang, you’ll need to buy a Handpan. You can learn about where to buy Handpans here:Hang Drums for Sale - FREE delivery & no waiting list - Handpan GuruYou can learn about the space drum and where to buy it here:Space Drum buyers guide + Alternatives to the Spacedrum

What's the difference between a handpan and steel tongue drum?

Tongue drums typically have a lower quality of sound and are less diverse in the amount of sounds they’re able to produce.Although some tongue drums sound amazing, Handpans typically sound better and can be played with just the hands. Tongue drums usually require mallets (sticks) to create a full sound. Not always is this the case, just be aware of this.If you’d like to learn more information about Handpans:Hang Drums for Sale - FREE delivery & no waiting list - Handpan GuruIf you’d like to learn more about Steel Tongue Drums check out:Steel Tongue Drums - Handpan Guru

I'd do a LOT of research before buying one so you get a quality instrument, but even then it might be difficult for a true Hang Drum --

Maybe consider a 'Turtle Drum', not quite as expensive

Of the one's I've heard I'd be more interested in the softer tones of the 'Zen Tambour' --

I don't have any of these instruments (nor really know what' the best deal for your money), but I'm sure there are other similar instruments out there. I hope you search out some Hang Drum related forums and ask you questions there, as I think you'll get better information than you'll get here.

I wonder if these instruments were all inspired (in some part) by the Gamelan --

What is the difference between a HAPI drum and a hang drum?

The Hang Drum is a metal plated “UFO” shaped instrument that uses grooved impressions to reverberate the sound. The grooves vary in size - the smaller the groove the higher the note. It is manufactured using 2 sheet metal plates that have been adhered together. Most Hang Drums have 7 distinct notes with a centre bass note. The Hapi Drum is a similar instrument, although instead of having impression grooves, it has “cut out” tabs, each ranging in area to create different notes. The Hapi Drum is a more commercially manufactured item and has become a craze after the manufacturing of the Hang Drum ceased. The original Hang Drum has been discontinued, and only available second hand on places like Ebay or Amazon. Hang Drums are considerably pricey at around $2500 for a used instrument, unlike the Hapi Drum instrument which you can buy new for around $300See more info athttp://www.hangdrumworld.com
