Is corn bad for you?

Corn: good or bad? With all the information out there about the starch/grain/vegetable being healthy or not, it can get a bit confusing at times. So website FabFitFun tells you what's poppin' and what's not with this barbecue staple:The good: Apart from providing 10 percent of your recommended daily fiber, corn is great for the digestive tract, can help prevent diabetes and is packed with antioxidants. And with 800 kernels on the average ear, it's definitely a satisfying mouthful. The bad: Turns out corn is a carb-filled grain, not a vegetable as so many people believe. What does this mean? As with everything, moderation is key. Toss some fresh kernels on your salad or a few ears on the grill, but keep it as a side meal and not a main course. Also, remember to buy during the summer months for the freshest crops and watch out for the slathering of butter that often comes with the cob.The worst: According to the Environmental Working Group, sweet corn is generally low in pesticides, but more than 70 percent of all corn in the U.S. is genetically modified. Researchers aren't sure what the long-term impact of the modifications are, but many recommend shelling out a few extra bucks for the organic variety. And of course, avoid high-fructose corn syrup, which studies say manipulates the chemicals in our body so we crave more of it.Start mornings rightA balanced breakfast is key to staying on track for the rest of the day and providing you with proper energy, says website FabFitFun.Try these nutritionally balanced breakfast choices to ensure that your body is fueled and that you can take on your day:• Quinoa -- it's a great gluten-free, protein- and fiber-rich breakfast option.• Whole-grain toast with almond butter -- almond butter is a great source of essential fatty acids and contains 25 percent less saturated fat than peanut butter.• Yogurt parfait -- combine Greek yogurt, walnuts and oats for a breakfast blend. Corn on the cob--how can I tell if it's bad?

The longer corn sits, the tougher and less sweet it becomes - that's because the natural sugars start turning to starch immediately after it's picked. As the corn gets older, the husks start to dry out - sounds like yours - and the kernels start to shrivel a bit if it's REALLY old. Usually the kernels will look fine but once cooked the corn will be chewy and not very sweet. Best to eat corn in a day or two. It won't be bad after a week (unless there's signs of mold or mildew on it) but it won't taste that great.

Can dogs eat corn?

Simple answer is yes —- as the others have noted if the corn kernal is not processed — fancy term for broken down or cracked —- then the dog cannot digest it and it will pass thru in the feces ( same with humans ) —- but any answers that says corn is not nutritious or that is a filler just don’t know what they are talking about —- definition of a filler is something that adds no nutritional value but is added to provide bulk —- corn is a great source of carbohydrates which provide a lot of calories ( ie nutrition ) —- yes corn is “processed “ — this means it has been ground —- if you like the term stone ground corn better use it because the operation is the same — processing is not evil —— corn is a good cheap source of carbohydrates which is why it is used in many pet foods — but there is a difference in feed grade corn and human grade corn so even though the premium foods may contain more corn than cheap brands the food is higher quality because of the grade of corn use ( this goes for all the ingredients by the way ) —— as far as the comment on GMO — that has to do with the plant not the grain — the plant is modified to be insect or pesticide resistant not the grain it produces — and any “ modified gene “ in the grain would be destroyed during the pasturization — cooking — of the food —— corn has taken a bad rap — mainly because feed companies were looking for something to try to convince you that their foods were better than competitors food —- when was the last time you heard a MD say eat less corn and vegetables — they are bad for you —- as far as grain free foods —- dogs DO NOT have any form of celiac disease — no gluten allergies —- yes they can be allergic to individual grains but on the allergy scale about 3% of dogs are allergic to corn — 26% to beef — 23% to dairy — 21 % to chicken —- so its not very common —- lets get things straight and stop giving corn a hard time
