Is A Political Science Degree Completely Useless To American Employers

Is a political science degree useless? Worried I'll be stuck in a useless job?

Go to law school, go for a PhD, get a MBA or get another 4 year degree.

I could expound but unless you're really tightly networked or have alot of skills in other areas I'd start planning ahead.

Is a political science degree utterly useless?

No, not at all. It is true that a degree in pol.sci. is a “generalist degree” and doesn’t qualify you for any specific job, however there are numerous jobs for which such a degree might be considered desirable. By having a degree in politics, you can demonstrate that you possess the research and argumentation skills that are necessary to obtain any academic qualification, as well as a general awareness of the systems that govern society. There are many jobs in which expertise in politics are a desirable qualification. Rather than qualifying you to do just one thing, a degree in political science shows that you have the potential to be able to do many things.

What is the difference between a B.S. and a B.A in Political Science?

For Political Science almost nothing.Generally a B.A. (in any subject) will err towards the Humanities & Liberal Arts, whereas a B.S. will err towards the hard(er) sciences. In political science, a B.A. program may include more philosophy, history, and political theory whereas a B.S. program may include more quantitative methods, economics, etc.In political science, no graduate school or potential employer will care whether you have a B.S. or B.A.- depending on what you’re trying to do they may care about the specific coursework you’ve completed, your quantitative skills, or research focus. But the won’t infer that from whether it’s a B.S. or B.A., they’d rely on your transcript and/or C.V..In a field like engineering for instance, there is a much more pronounced difference between a B.A. and a B.S.. But due to the nature of political science as a field, it’ll always be straddling the gap between social science & the humanities.

Is political science a useless major?

I want to study political science at the school I was accepted to - San Francisco State University but my dad told me that he will financially cut me off if I decide to make that "stupid decision." He told me to find something useful like Business Administration, Accounting, Electrical Engineering or Biology /Chemistry.

I noticed that political science doesn't correlate to any real jobs and most graduate programs will have a link that says "Hire a Political Science PhD" and lists all of their unemployed graduates looking for track tenures. I read an article online that says that Political Science is one of the easiest majors in a university which explains why the average GPA could be 3.6-3.7 at some colleges.

Why are political science degrees considered worthless?

Who says they are worthless? In the context that they are a “Liberal Arts” degree along with English, philosophy, history, a language, psych, etc. as a stand alone degree they have no predetermined career path as would, say, an engineering or business degree. However, I would contend that as a field of study it is specialized and can provide pathways to other fields ;-It is perhaps the most common field of study as a major for law school entrance (I and other classmates who were poly sci majors got into law school).-It provides cross studies in American and/or International history and politics. As such Public Administration and/or International Affairs are good career fields for Poly Sci majors-It provides understanding of political process and structure and as such a good background for a career in politics or government service.- Non profits and non-government organizations are also good fields of work for Poly Sci majors, e.g. advocacy and lobbyist positions-From the American Poly Sci Assoc. webpage: “If you are interested in a career in journalism or media, political science training can give you the substantive and analytical background you need. Typically political science courses place heavy emphasis on developing fluid and clear writing and speaking skills, which are beneficial for positions in print or broadcast journalism, publishing, social media, communications, and public relations.”-Academia does use all aspects of Poly Sci research, policies, government and analysis.

Is a double major in Political Science and Socioloy a good combo?

The job prospects for political science majors include going on to law school to become a lawyer and going on for a master's or doctorate in political science and working on the staff of a legislator or legislative committee. The double major in sociology will probably not be of much benefit. If you want do a double major, economics would be best with political science for legislative employment. History might be helpful, but would not be nearly so beneficial for legislative employment as economics would be. Economics can also lead to business employment and would be the choice which would lead to the most opportunities.
