What is the oxidation state of CuCO3?
The overall charge of the compound is 0, so we know that this is what the total oxidation state must be. Start with oxygen which is always -2 (except in a couple of circumstances but that's not relevant for this question.) Multiply by 3 because it's O3 so the oxidation state of oxygen is -6. Copper is +2, you can tell from its valency. So the oxidation state so far is -4 (-6+2). As it needs to equal 0, carbon must be +4 (-4+4=0.)
