Is Best Buy Total Garbage And The Geek Squad

Geek Squad's MRI Cd in a computer?

My friend sent his computer to best buy to get a software problem fixed and they couldn't fix it, so he gave the computer to my brother to fix and he fixed it.... my brother told me that the "dumb**''s at Geek Squad left there MRI Cd in his computer" this was like a month ago....

... recently i went into his room and he had a program running on a computer with the geek squad logo on it. i asked him if he didn't return the cd and he said "I got the iso off then cracked the security on it and returned the original" whatever that means... anyways my question is that my brother uses that program to fix a lot of peoples computers for free.. is this illegal? What should i do? Is it okay? because i asked him if it was illegal and he just said something like "Doesn't matter if its legal, it matters if its ethical. Geek Squad charges outrageous for services that require no talent or skill set to use... its that ethical?"

Part of me doesn't want to say anything but idk.

How are some cell phone and computer repair places sooo much cheaper than others (like GeekSquad)? Is there something sketchy they are doing like going through my files?

I can think of two reasons:OverheadsThe cost of the building, rents and or leases for a large square footage of real estate, has to be recovered.Property, state, federal taxes are larger.Insurance costs such as public and employers liability.Utilities, light, water etcStaff salaries, enrollments, advertisingAll these costs have to accounted in each repair.Smaller mum and pop stores, have much lower overheadsProfitsEach large company will have its rules on how much profit had to be made to cover expansion, miscellaneous itemsThese are only some of the things that make large companies be more expensive.AndrePs) going through your files is another matter.

Why does my Laptop get so hot?

Take it from me an others here, could be your fan or could be dust. Since you said " its been five years since you had the labtop" could be time for a cleaning. Your fan: However, if it was your fan your pc would tell you. So I am betting it needs to be cleaned. If its not any of those, check to see if its a software issue. Bring up task manager and check to see if your cpu is spiking up when you idle. If so, you could download an anti-virus known as malware bites. However, if your computer is infected I would just do a wipe of your HD. Then the problem should be solved.

CAUTION! If you don't know how to do a cleaning of a PC, Dont wing it!! Look at some youtube videos before you even thinking about trying anything. Doing so recklessly would probably trash your PC.

TIPS:
When your cleaning a labtop dont clean it inside, or at least not in the room you use it in the most. Mainly because the dust will more than likely just end up getting sucked back in haha. I would also recommend you use a tooth bush on the vents and the fan. DO NOT use things that might create static. Stay way from metal objects. I personally use a vacuum: With just the rubber holes. DO NOT equip the nose or anything. Just use the rubber holes, if you want to use a vacuum and use the blower. Hope this helps!

Installed 8GB in my laptop, but it shows only 2.87 usable?

Wow! This a lot of great information. I love the folks on Yahoo Answers. Thank you. Based upon your input here is additional info:

I have checked and I am running a 32 bit OS, but it is upgradable to 64 bit with a clean install, (Yuck!)

It is curious that even though my Toshiba Satellite L505-s5984 laptop is capable of accepting 8GB and the system SHOWS 8GB installed, it still only shows the same amount of usable memory as when I had 3GB installed, namely 2.87GB. I tried re-installing the modules physically, twice.

My system:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T6500 @ 2.10GHz
Memory (RAM) 8.00 GB
Graphics Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
Gaming graphics 1341 MB Total available graphics memory
Primary hard disk 24GB Free (223GB Total)

So, what do you think?

How large is the computer repair industry?

It is shrinking.I work for a national chain.  We've got over 200o stores across the USA.  Among other things, we repair computers... and no, I don't work with the Geek Squad. This company is currently pricing vendor parts to a point that is geared toward making the consumer choose to replace their existing computer with a new one, rather than repair their old one.  We have had missives passed down to us from our regional manager, to our store manager, and then to us that we should discourage customers from getting lengthy involved repairs, in favor of just replacing their older computer with a new one.  If the repair is going to require actual labor and time being spent on it, we should encourage the purchase of a new computer. If I didn't need the job, I'd quit. The trend in general, and not just from this one chain... is to replace rather than repair.  The pricing models have come down.  You can now purchase a new laptop for less than a new desktop.  People have come to accept the idea that they should replace their computer every TWO years, instead of every THREE... although even that amount of time was ridiculous (aka too short).Now... you asked how large it is.  Well, I imagine you can find at least one computer repair shop in every city... and likely in every town of substantial size.  I live in a dying "city" that is literally crumbling... and has a population of about one tenth of what it did back in the 1920's and 30's.  There's my big chain store, and three computer repair shops.  In fact, in the city itself, there are more computer repair shops than fast food (although as you leave the city center, the fast food crops up).I don't have numbers.  The large chain store I work for doesn't want to share their numbers, because they use those numbers to manipulate people into buying what they want to sell them.  The smaller shops don't call in their numbers to any central location so studies can be done like this.However... considering that almost everyone in the USA has a computer of some sort, and considering that the machines have actually not become only disposable devices YET... there will always be a need for computer repair shops as long as the machines can be serviceable.  Of course, this need isn't going to stop more unscrupulous companies from trying to create more trash by encouraging people to throw away rather than repair and reuse.
