Computer Science is a fairly broad term that can cover a lot of different areas from engineering to software development to just knowing how to set up a network. Virtually ALL community colleges offer some form of CS degree. I think the issue for you is that an AA in some of these areas may not be enough to get you a career. Contact your local CC or look online. They are likely to offer AA and Certificate programs in things like computer information systems, Network Technology, Game Development, Computer Graphics, etc.

Im 20 years old right now and it has taken me so long to figure out what i want major in. ive tried everything from pre med to mass media to marketing to nursing and nothing could hold my attention. after countless hours of googling and looking at the courses for different majors i think its finally hit me that id be a perfect fit for computer science. for starters, im an introvert. im sure comp sci people have to be outgoing to some extent and thats fine i mean thats life you cant just be a hermit forever, but i could sit on a computer all day figuring things out and not get bored. now that i think about it ive always been into computers. when i was younger i was in a robotics course at my elementary school and i loved it. also back when myspace was a hit i was obsessed with learning the html to make layouts instead of actually myspacing. then when the site switched over to css i sat for hours learning css. now i make themes for tumblr just for fun. i know computer science is more than css and html, im just trying to make a point. i love everything about computers. when im at the mall i always stop in the microsoft and apple stores just to mess around with their computers and ask questions about them. my parents are always asking me to fix something on the computer here at home because they know im good at it. im not amazing at math but im not terrible at it. i could deal with it. and i love chemistry which is what a lot of the courses consisted of when i was looking at the required classes at the college im going to attend for it. i hate biology though, so i think thats why nursing and pre med never worked out for me. is this an in demand field? hows the pay? ive even heard i can get some pretty decent scholarships since im a girl in a STEM field. i think a robotics or security concentration would be cool. any input would be awesome.

I am currently enrolled with ITT-Tech and pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Information System Security. Based on my personal experience I can tell you that I am enjoying every bit of it. IT Security has always been in the background but it recently has started becoming a fields of its own over the past few years that have passed. I will tell you this that if you pursue a career in computers, prepare yourself that to some degree continued education will always be a MUST. This means that in order to stay up to date, you will need to seek education to stay up to date with the lates technology and practices. No Offense to Dakota but if money is your single motivation then I would not recommend pursuing a career in anything. The sad thing is that I know too many people who made that mistake and ended up going back to school to pursue a degree in something else. Nothing wrong with that but I would recommend pursuing a career in something you are going to enjoy.

Absolutely. I was a computer science major before switching to Finance in post-grad. When I moved to Wall Street, I used my computer skills every day. Although I worked as a deal structurer, not as a programmer, many of the deals I worked on used Monte Carlo analysis, and had to be modeled using C/C++, or Java, or VBA, etc. It would have been very inefficient to use the resources of the technology department to model the deals.Because of my computer background I was able to build risk monitoring and hedging systems, to value the bank’s portfolio, and programs to price esoteric asset-backed securities. Most of the deals were one-off structures, so the ability to modify my programs to see how new features would affect how the deal worked was invaluable.Today, even more than in the past, a computer science background will stand you in good stead in Finance, as the financial world becomes more automated, involves the ever-greater use of data analytics, and as risk management continues to become more and more important.

Absolutely! In fact, physicians with an interest in Medical Informatics (computer science applied to medicine) are in high demand. However, before you commit to this course, you should probably do a bit more investigation about medical school and, especially, what a physician’s life and work entail. It’s not like what is portrayed on TV. Since premeds should select a major course of study that they will enjoy learning, rather than following the typical route, following your love of computers and physics is great. While most premedical students take biology or chemistry, the best choice is to enroll in a major in which you are most interested. That way, you will do an outstanding job, develop great study habits, and be seen as someone who valued his/her undergraduate education, rather than seeing it only as a pathway to medical school. Both of the answers that I see here are correct. Computer science is a good major in that it leads to patent law, and patent law is not only fairly lucrative, but law schools like to admit people whom they believe have a good chance of getting a job when they graduate. This was very specifically mentioned to me at the Washington DC law forum on July 23, 2016, when I was representing a client who has a degree in electrical engineering. Her obvious likelihood of employment was counted as a strong positive factor in her application.The only possible downside is that computer science and other STEM subject undergrads often don't do well in the verbal skills is so essential to being a good lawyer. I would be very careful to brush up on my writing skills before taking the LSAT, because there is a handwritten writing sample as part of the test, and most schools do look at it.
