Is Doing Masters In Filmmaking Worth It

Is going to film school worth it?

Okay so here's my thing. I'm on strike 2 and I don't want a strike three. I want the third time to be the charm. Is film school worth it? I mean do you learn different jobs so that if you can't say a director you can get a job on a set doing something?

I want to go to film school to be a director. BUT I KNOW seeing certain directors "make it" is like winning a lottery. Maybe it's not and I just don't know that many directors. If directing doesn't work out, what can you do on a movie set where you're gonna get paid (preferably salary or maybe a couple of thousand/enough to do the next movie)....

The economy's bad, so if I go to film school, I'm hoping I get a job out of it. (I went to school for dance and that didn't do jack for me and I'm about to graduate and go to a career that I absolutely can't stand. HELP!!!

thanks
Cool college girl

Is getting your B.A for film studies worth it? ?

getting a BA is good if you want to increase your knowledge.
becoming an editor, you just need to know all editing programs, have a good reel, and network.
many of the schools i know would only have 1-2 editing course, idk if the school of your choice has their own separate thing.
you won't get a job just because you have a degree, so don't depend on automatically getting hired after you graduate with no experience. so you MUST do internships they are important, first impressions are important, and again, networking is important.
yeah it's hard to become a well known editor. you would need years and years of experience and knowledge, and recommendations.

i wanted to be an editor, met people who do editing for television. all said that it was extremely hard. they said that you really have to stand out from everyone. they aren't "well known" editors but they've been editing for many years. this one guy told me that he had a friend who had 3 different degrees in film and he doesn't have a job. it's all about exposing yourself.

i think i remember them saying that they started 300 a week, but it really depends. i heard some people got paid 12 an hour in the beginning. but hey it's only the beginning of their careers.

Is it worth doing M.A. in Film and TV production from Amity University, Noida?

may be if you apply your knowledge by opting for jobs in industry .

Is it worth getting a film degree?

It really depends on what you want to do with it. A BA in Film Studies won't qualify you for much job-wise. In other words, I don't recall many job postings looking for people with a BA or MA in film. With a film degree, you'll be able to dissect and analyze films more intelligently. So if you can also write, you may be able to make (some kind of) a living writing for film journals, movie reviews, etc.
If you fill out your schedule with "technical" film classes, you can always find camera/sound/editing/etc. work. When I was taking film classes, there were essentially 2 paths in the major; technical and academic. The technical folks found plenty of work, but the academic folks were a bit more limited.
I'll put it to you another way, my wife has a BA in film (non-technical) and now works in HR...
In any case, there's no reason why you can't take a few introductory film classes as electives and see what you think of them.

Is film school worth it?

Yes, without a doubt. I'll admit, nobody cares if you have that piece of paper saying that you've got a degree in filmmaking. But making your way in the film industry, even outside of Big Hollywood, is all about who you know and what work you've already done, and those are the areas where a good film school can give a significant leg up. You have the chance to make a lot of contacts via your peers, the faculty, and any other professionals you might meet through internships setup by the school, visiting filmmakers, etc. By the time you graduate, you'll be guaranteed to have both real-world film experience with others serious about their craft and a portfolio of work to show off. You might even have some quality internships to point to. I, for one, went to North Carolina School of the Arts, a school I'd recommend to anybody serious about filmmaking (at the time I attended, one major publication ranked the school 13th best film school in the world, and 7th best in the country, impressive for a school that isn't private). By the end of my first year, I had wrote and directed 3 short films and had practical, hands-on experience in virtually all areas of filmmaking. By the time I graduated, I'd directed 5 films and edited 10, and to have that many films under your belt was pretty typical of the students graduating (I'm not even counting the films I worked on in that period that were outside of school projects). On top of that, I can honestly say that every paying job I've had since graduation can be traced back to a former professor or fellow film student who called me up with an opportunity. I had one professor who received a small job offer she didn't have time for, so she gave them my number. That gig lead to a whole slew of other paying jobs, including a job editing for a syndicated TV show. If I hadn't gone to film school, I hate to think of how much I would have missed out on learning, and how much longer it probably would have taken for me to get my foot in the door somewhere. Film school certainly isn't required to be a filmmaker. But the time and money spent on film school is a small price to pay for the advantages you get out of it, provided you go to a decent school.

Is film school worth it?

I'm currently at university studying media, writing and production. I want to be a writer/director once i've finished uni and i'm thinking of applying to film schools in america or canada. Would it be worth it?

Is Film Studies a worthwhile major to study?

I'm a junior in high school so I have a little while to decide.
But I'm taking film classes in high school and it's kind of my thing. Whether its screenwriting, post-production (FX and editing and soundtrack), crew or directing, all of it interests me.
I've read a lot of Film programs from numerous schools including Wesleyan, Northwestern, Columbia to Florida State and even Yale..
But to be honest, I don't know if, for an undergraduate major, going to a super prestigious school for a Film Studies major would be worth the cost. I have the academics covered and my GPA is upwards of 4.. but I don't know if going to a private college would be worth it when I could get a good degree at Mizzou where I'm from for much less. Graduate school is different, and I'm not so worried about that for now.

Also, one worry about the major, that I realize filmmaking is a kind of competitive industry and I am not guaranteed a lot of success. For those who have majored in this area, what is it you have ended up doing? Independent films or are you working for a production studio? Or what else? Basically, what's in it for me after I get my degree?

What is the best film school to get a master's degree in directing?

You can learn plenty about making films from watching thousands and thousands of them.
