Is Graphic Design A Good Major

Is graphic design a good major?

I am approaching the end to my junior year of high school. Today I had a meeting with my mom and my guidance consular about college and all that fun stuff. I recently decided that i am very interested in graphic design. I am currently taking a photography class where we use photoshop and it is so interesting to me. Can I make a career having a graphic design major? Also, do women choose this major too?

Should I major in Graphic Design?

At first I wanted to major in Computer Science but then I realized I had to take a lot of math which is not a strength of mine. I always wanted to work with computers so I was wondering if majoring in Graphic Design is a good idea career wise? I took graphic design classes in high school, so I already know how work with programs such as Indesign,Illustrator, and some Photoshop.

What is a good double major for Graphic design??

Congratulations, that is very exciting! A double major to compliment graphic design - that is a tough question and it really depends on your tastes and abilities. If you love arts and crafts, you would do well to take some fine art classes including drawing and painting. If you feel that computers are the way to go, maybe some computer programming classes. Other classes that would compliment graphic design include marketing and outreach, multicultural and diversity classes, or even some classes in business.

Good luck and have fun in college!

Is Graphic Design too risky of a major?

I'll be applying to colleges soon, and I am planning on going to school for graphic design. I was wondering if that too risky of a major? What will the job market be like for someone looking for a job in Graphic Design with a BFA or a MFA? Should I consider a double major? If I should, then what are some college majors that would make sense to go along with my art degree? In school english and history are my forte, so anything with heavy amounts of math and science are out of the question. And being an art teacher is an obvious choice, and not one I'm planning on taking. Thanks!

Is graphic arts/graphic design a good major with lots of career opportunities in your county?

There are a lot of jobs in this field but there are still more graduates than jobs. Architecture either pays well or not at all. There are a lot of out of work architects right now.

Graphic arts will rarely make you rich but there are way more jobs.

Japan does not accept immigrant workers that are not ethnic Japanese. Graphic Arts is not considered a sufficiently high skill for an immigrant visa unless the person had become famous at it.

This link considers certain degrees useless as the number of jobs that will be created in the field up to 2018 is less than the number of graduates in one year in that major

Here is a list of average starting & mid-career salaries for most 4 year majors. Note these stats only apply to people who actually got a job in that field. Many graduates in the lower half of the list never get a job in their field & are not counted.

The higher they pay, the harder the major & generally the more math needed. Just be aware that high pay does not mean high demand.

But on the bright side, if you have a genuine interest in the field you are pursuing & are willing to throw yourself in it & do anything for it, you will fare better than someone doing something because they can’t think of anything better to do. Those with a real passion for something can move mountains to become successful, but if you don’t have that fire in you, you are at a disadvantage

Do you think that graphic design is one of the good majors to find a job in the US market?

First thanks for the A2A...2nd, it's not so much what you major in, but how you use it. If you major in graphic design, but don't use the creative processes you learned, then you've wasted four years of education and untold dollars in tuition. Whatever, you major in, study subjects of interest to you. Learn how to think creatively and critically. Continue to learn in your first job out of school. Observe what works and doesn't work in corporate America. Apply what works, discard what doesn't.The trick...Continue to learn throughout your life.

Graphic Design or Studio Art major?

Hey Tarawr the Ninja, if that's your name... awesome!

Okay, I did graphic design as a major... and I regret not getting a degree in a science related field, I also regret not studying more about writing. Writing is crucial for what I do now... I run an online startup, for which I'm a graphic designer and UX (user experience) designer. Knowing photoshop, illustrator and other graphics programs are crucial to what I do, but knowing how to communicate to people and run a business on a day to day... are more important.

Graphic design is ultimately self-taught... but you need to know where to look for inspiration and how-to-learn. Having a resource of smart peers in college (my graphic design and arts field majors) around me helped inspire and motivate me everyday. Can you do a dual major??

I would choose art if I were you, if you have to choose between the two and then focus all your focus in the art program on being a graphic designer. You'll be able to accomplish WAY cooler stuff, without the pressure of producing a cookie-cutter graphic design degree.

Finally, who you are surrounded by is the most important thing. Check out start-up university, if you're motivated enough, maybe you just need to be surrounded by people who will push you to where you need to go.

Should my daughter major in graphic design?

No, graphic design pays poorly in comparison to most professions. It is very deadline intensive and therefor very stressful. And sitting in front of a computer for 60hrs a week begins to cause serious health issues after ten years or so.

Also, the market is saturated with designers. Competition for to jobs is intense which causes the wages to stay low. In short, there are already too many graphic designers.

The other problem is that you only need to be creative and computer literate to be a successful designer. Some of the most successful designers I know have no manual artistic skills at all. The computer allows these people to realise the ideas in their mind without being able to draw.

The only plus is that it is quite satisfying when you get to see your finished work.

If I could go back I would do Architecture.
