Is It A Good Idea To Fundraise On Remembrance Day

Why do football players wear black coloured armbands and red coloured flowers every now and then in the Premier League?

Black armbands made mandatory for all Premiership kitsThe black sashes will be sewn into a sleeve of each player’s shirt, in an acknowledgment of modern footballers’ griefaholic tendencies.Soccer pundit Wayne Hayes said: “Historically, the black bands were only worn when key players from a club passed on or to mark the anniversary of something that has adversely affected football.“But today’s footballers are like Victorians when it comes to mourning. They’ll pop on a sash if the club’s drinks machine runs out of soup, or if the manager’s car fails its MOT.”Further to the new regulations, clubs wishing to mark especially sad occasions such as a player’s cousin’s stick insect’s death will be invited to wear an additional arm band.Teams marking an actual human death will  be expected to mask their goalkeeper in a floor-lenth black veil without eye-holes.The compulsory armbands are not the only change introduced to appease the Premiership’s appetite for melancholia. The traditional minute’s silence preceding most games, will now be followed by John Lennon’s Imagine or anything by James Blunt, and the half time pie will be replaced by a buffet of cold cuts covered in cling film. The black bands are worn by the players to mark something,i.e to show something or to pay homage. The Poppy :(Red flower)The English premier league may have wondered about the small red flower the players and managers wearing in their kits or suits. well,  It’s a Remembrance Day Poppy. The poppy is worn in remembrance of those who fought for the allied forces during World War 2 as they grew on the fields where the battles were fought. There is no connection between football and poppy whatsoever and everyone in the Britain do the same to honor the dead.

The Gay-Straight Alliance?

I want to start a GSA at my school next year, but it all depends on how brave I get... my area's not exactly open-minded.

Anyway, I think celebration/awareness days and events like the Day of Silence, National Coming Out Day, and Pride are always good places to start when it comes to awareness. Also, simply getting included with the other clubs, for example in the yearbook or in a school parade, can be an accomplishment in and of itself in some schools.

To get people to join... posters, announcements, awareness-type days, even just word of mouth can be very powerful. Try even explaining to a just few people in your classes why the GSA exists and why it's a great way to make a difference in your school.

As far as topics of discussion- support-type meetings, where anyone is free to talk about their problems or what they are thinking at the time can be very helpful to struggling students. Besides that, more specific topics like gay rights and equality, coming out, how to report and stop harassment, how to respond to discrimination, what laws are in place to prevent this, and what legislation your GSA may like to support or get written in your area. The members of the GSA will probably have additional ideas for topics, if you talked about what to talk about or had everyone write down an idea.

Wow, I wrote alot. Hopefully there are a few ideas in there that may be helpful. =)

What is the significance of wearing a white poppy?

The white poppy is supposed to be promoting peace, under the mistaken notion that red poppies either promote or glorify war.As red poppies neither promote nor glorify war, but instead stand for remembrance and remind us of the price that humans pay in wars, and remind us that bereaved families and those physically or mentally injured by wars need the sort of help provided by the Royal British Legion, the gesture of wearing a white poppy seems to me to be a slap in the face of those who suffered and who are currently suffering from the effects of wars.I am sure that the Peace Pledge Union who introduced the white poppy as a symbol of pacifism in 1921 meant well. But I am equally sure that doing so politicised poppy-wearing, and led to divisiveness and to the sort of decisions like the Football Association not allowing poppies to be worn on players’ kits under the mistaken notion that poppies are a political symbol. If people want to wear white poppies or purple ones (signifying remembrance of animals who died in war), then that is their choice. But I will continue to wear my red poppy with pride and I will continue to see it as a symbol of remembrance of both the human and animal cost of wars, of a hope for a future without war, as a mark of respect to those who gave their lives so that we can choose to wear any colour poppy or none, and as a fundraising device for the Royal British Legion.
