Is It Bad That I Am Not Able To Attend The Open House For Admitted Students

What should I expect when going to an open house for college?

The regular open house that university operates includes tour of campus, distribution of more information materials, maybe free souvenir and summary of the good things that the universities have to offer as well as questions and answers sessions (minimum with some university staffs).

They are designed to help recruit students and help students clarify their doubts.

Some students have problems deciding which university to choose and the open house is the event that they would want to attend. It gives them a chance to look at the campus as an invited visitor and talk with staffs of the university (as opposed to visiting as an uninvited guess and not knowing where to walk or talk to). Open houses also allow prospective students to see for themselves whether what they have heard about the university is true and to what extend true.

Refreshments are sometimes provided.

I probably would also be able to tour some of the dormitories during the open house. Typically the universities would show you some of their best facilities including dorms, labs, gym, classrooms, libraries, studios, buildings and other facilities.

It is advisable for prospective students who are seriously considering a college or having a hard-time deciding between two or more colleges (eg between NJIT, Rutgers, Stevens and the College of New Jersey) as the open-house session would make the decision easier.

Obviously there may be some sales pitching but when you hear from different Us, you have the complete idea what each U could offer you.

Seeing is different from just hearing or reading..

For example, NJIT was rated as the no 1 Least Beautiful Campus in USA and having dungeon feeling dorms by an established publisher recently.. see for yourself whether it is that ugly at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSJZ6468u... (the tall red building is one of the dorms). Also there is the almost on campus University Center which is just next to the InfoTech building (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMhY7i8_M... ). These are just two of the dungeons....

Open houses clarifies all queries and doubts....

Can you take the Specialized High Schools Admission Test (SHSAT) twice?

I am in 8th grade right now and took the Specialized High Schools Admission Test this year and got into Brooklyn Tech (yay!), however I cannot go there because my parents do not want me to. I went to the open house with them and I cannot blame them for being scared. I really want to go the school, but it's in a really bad neighborhood (no offense to anybody). My parents' biggest excuse is that I'm a girl and therefore it is more dangerous for me to go so far ( I live like 1 1/2 hours away from Brooklyn Tech by car) I was under the illusion that you can only take the exam once, either in 8t grade or 9th, but I have been informed by other friends and colleagues who took the exam and got accepted somewhere, that you can take the exam in both the 8th and 9th grade. It would make my life a lot easier if that were true. So I wanted to ask everyone that is it true? Can you take the SH SAT twice, once in 8th and then in 9th grade? (because I really want to get into Bronx instead of Brooklyn because that was originally my 1st choice and they also have a yellow bus which makes my parents feel much, much better about my safety!)

What happened on your first day at IIT?

Let me describe my initial days here at IIT Delhi.I was alloted Shivalik Hostel which is the oldest hostel at IITD. My reporting was on 18th July (which is also my birthday, lol). I had already read on quora about the quality of rooms so didn't expect much. The room was a single sized one (shared by two people) and had two beds, an almirah, a table and two chairs. I arrived at the hostel at around 11am, put down my bags, bought essentials like mattress, pillow, bucket etc. Also met my roommate that day and went home at around 2/3pm (I live in Delhi). My next three days were orientation and we were told a lot about the college and campus. Also explored a few places with some friends I made in the Hostel. The best part is the diversity here, I have friends from all corners of India now. The orientation included department introduction, orientation of all clubs, campus tour etc. We were also alloted a mentor, (a mentor has around 4-6 mentees) to whom we are supposed to ask any doubts we have during the first year. Also tried some sports and gym. The weather during those days was really nice so it felt wonderful to explore the campus. My classes started from 23rd july. I woke up at 6.30am, bathed, had breakfast and went to the lecture hall (which is around 1km from my hostels). It was an interesting class and later that day we had ED lecture which was really boring and chemistry lab (which is newly constructed and is really a state of art) which was over early as it was just an introduction. At the end of first week, I had attended chemistry, maths (linear algebra), ed lab and product realization (which we call ‘mazdoori’) as well. It was really an interesting experience, some classes being boring and some being exciting but the change in level of education from school to college was visible in each.Regarding mess food, initally it was above my expectation (as I had read a lot of bad things about mess food on Quora) but I heard from seniors that its quality will decrease exponentially throughout the year and after 1 month, I can say that it is quite true. The food is decent but worse than how it was in the first month.
