Is It Crazy That I Want To Be An Army Ranger

My parents don't want me joining the Army Rangers?

I admire you so much! My advice would be to follow your dream, but I must tell you.. being around so many military men and women, most of the people I know regret joining. It all seems a certain way when you think about it, but once you're in.. you'll notice how completely different it is than what you envision. Maybe you should join for 4 years active, and if it's not something you want to do for the rest of your life, than simply don't reenlist. But please keep in mind that I've met people as passionate as you and now that they're in, they want to leave so bad.. but they can't, they're stuck until their active duty contract is over. But yes, just join and see if it's for you.. and like I said, if you do join and don't want to stay, just do not reenlist.

I wish you all the luck in the world! Take care!!!

EDIT: Please just sign a normal 8 year contract (4 active, and 4 reserve). TRUST ME, that's the best thing you should do. Once you're active.. and if you feel that that's something you want to do for the rest of your life, than when your active years are done.. you have a chance to reenlist.. you even get bonus money and are able to pick where you want to be stationed. BUT if you (like EVERY active duty person I met..which has been plenty) don't want to reenlist because it's not what you envision, than you simply get put after 4 years and use the GI Bill and go to college. Please consider that before trying to sign any 40 year contract (if there is one).

What Are Army Ranger Missions?

Rangers operate in large units, mostly Company size or greater. The main difference in infantry and Ranger is you're parachute qualified. In Grenada, the Rangers were tasked with taking an airfield while Marine infantry was tasked with taking another airfield, the Marines had far greater success. In the early hours of the invasion of Iraq, Rangers parachuted into the oil fields to guard them.

You aren't looking for Rangers if you want to operate in small teams. The people who do this and are HALO/HAHO qualified are Special Forces, Marine Force Recon, MARSOC, and SEALs. They are the only ones qualified for combat dive.

Anyone here with Army Ranger experience?

Listen you are doing this all wrong...
Do exactly what Diablo 6 posted so I don't have to repeat the post. Go to the 75th Ranger Regiment as a medic. You'll go to Ranger School later as you been in the unit for a while (6 months to a year after attended Pre-Ranger). No problem there.

The starving now is crazy and is not good even if and when you do go for real. You need all that muscle mass and some body fat. Just keep in shape. Anyway, you'll learn all this in Pre-Ranger school.

Becoming a Ranger

To become a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment, prospective Rangers must be qualified in their MOS and be Airborne qualified.

New soldiers with Ranger contracts attend nine weeks of Basic Combat Training (BCT), followed by Advanced Individual Training (AIT), the United States Army Airborne School and finally Ranger Indoctrination Program (RIP) one immediately after the other.

Soldiers already Airborne-qualified transferring from other units are separated into two groups: grades E-5 and below will attend RIP, while grade E-6 and above (including officers) will attend the Ranger Orientation Program (ROP). Upon graduation of RIP/ROP, the new Rangers will be assigned to either one of the three Ranger Battalions, the 75th Regimental Headquarters or the newly formed Ranger Special Troops Battalion (RSTB), where they are now authorized to wear the Ranger tan beret, the Ranger Scroll of their parent unit and the distinctive black physical training uniform.

Is being in the Army Rangers outright dangerous?

Here is a bit of what I experienced, why I chose to be a Ranger and what he can expect. I enlisted with the “"Ranger Option” meaning I had the opportunity to go to a Ranger Battalion if I successfully completed my Basic Training, Advanced Training, Airborne Training and passed the selection process in RIP, the Ranger Indoctrination Program where Ranger Instructors test you physically and mentally as well as teaching us the history of the Rangers. It is a privilege to be in a Ranger Battalion. It is 100% voluntary and through that alone you have a group of men who are there for the right reasons. Everyone works their asses off every day and he will be trained, trained and trained so he can execute the mission in his sleep. Every man in the Battalion is taught and expected to LIVE the Ranger Creed. Look it up and read it to really understand what I mean. The saying that you hear in military circles of “"Never leaving a man behind” is from the Ranger Creed. “"I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of my enemy” is a direct quote. The Rangers are the very Best Light Infantry warriors in the US Military and are esteemed members of the Special Operations community. He will be in good hands and will have a brotherhood for life. There are just three Ranger Battalions and one Regimental Headquarters unit in the world. We volunteer knowing that we could be put in harms way but we know we are a part of the very best fighting unit in the world and are working with the BEST Special Operations Units on the battlefield, i.e. SEALs, Green Berets, Delta and other units around the world.
