Is It Easier To Get A Job For Having A Degree On Digital Film Making Or In Photography

Is an associates degree in photography worth anything? How to make my family understand is what I want?

Hell ... these days a Pulitzer prize for photojournalism is apparently worth next to nothing.

"The Chicago Sun-Times laid off its entire full-time photography staff Thursday, including a Pulitzer Prize winner, in a move that the newspaper's management said resulted from a need to shift toward more online video."

Better yet is this bit of info:

"The Chicago Sun-Times is training its journalists in iPhone camera work to replace its staff photographers, who were all laid off last week."

You read that right ... JOURNALISTS are going to be expected to do the job of pro photographers (a job they are not properly trained to do) using a CAMERA PHONE while trying to do their own job as journalists.

That's how much Photography is valued these days.

So you mom isn't completely wrong. People don;t value phootgrpahy anymore, I just finished answering another question here from a photographer who's expected to shoot a wedding for free and when he mentioned 1000$ one family member said 300$ and the mother of the bride (or groom) said that was STILL to expensive and that people were going to be there with their point and shoot cameras so they didn't want to pay ANYTHING.

It will get worse before it gets better as well.

What is the difference between photography and graphic design?

in photography, you are using a camera to take actual photographs of objects. In graphic design, you are using a computer to design an image from scratch. Some jobs you could get in the field of photography include: wedding photographer, modeling, you could work for various magazines or fashion industries whereas graphic design is more business oriented and with that you would be able to get jobs in nearly any commercial business field, designing logos for companies and products. The possibilities are all what you make of them!

Is being a Photographer a good job?

Well....I hate to break it to you....but your mother is 100% right. Photography has to be one of the "lower paying" jobs out there. Free lance photography can be murder on you checking account. You only get paid if your "produce" something saleable.

That's not to say that you couldn't be a GREAT photographer someday. There really is NO REASON why you cannot do both.

In college I will suggest Nursing as your MAJOR. Art/photography as your MINOR. Prove to your Mom that you can be good nurse and a good photographer. Also....photography is an EXPENSIVE HOBBY....you're gonna need that FAT Nurse paycheck to buy the equipment you'll need to succeed in photography.

Maybe the two jobs could merge into one??? I knew an Army Captain who was an doctor in the Army. He took photos and video in surgery when requested to do so by the doctors. These photos and videos are used to help train other doctors and to document disease, injuries and other problems for insurance companies and/or lawsuits.

Good Luck

Is Photography a secure job?

There is no such thing as a secure job these days, just about every field is always in danger of cutbacks or unemployment. Photography, or indeed anything involving the arts or media is in more danger than just about anything else. Very few jobs with many, many people wanting them, plus the advent of digital technology and cheap DSLR's mean less and less available work for professionals. By all means look at photography as a career, but I would advise you look at doing it as a side job. Pick a career that guarantees you a wage every month and some form of job security (such as a career in healthcare), and do some photography on the side such as weddings, portraits etc. You could even look at setting up your own home studio. Something for you to think about anyway..

Job opportunities with Media Arts & Animation degree or Digital Film-making & Video Production?

So, like the tittle suggests; what are the job opportunities I'd have with one of those two degrees. Like, what companies hire people with such skills and if possible, where are these companies located?

Photography jobs (without college)?

Are there any jobs/careers in the photography field that does NOT require special schooling or college? I like photography/taking pictures, but I'm not able to attend college right now because it would be out of my financial situation right now. So are there any types of ways you could make money doing something photography-ish, but without needing specific/special schooling?
Please list what the jobs are and what they require and how you get one in your area. Thanks ahead of time!

Is being a photographer a good career?

sadly, no it isn't. It does not pay nearly enough for the work, it doesn't give you enough money to pay the bills and put food on the table. Most photographers who own a business end up having to shut down their studio because they don't get enough customers. People don't like to pay to have their picture taken anymore. They think they can buy their own camera and have equal shots to the pros. It's sad to say this, but it's the cold hard truth, years ago you might have been able to thrive, but in these times, it's a different story.
