My Parents Are Forcing Me to Get My Haircut!?
I know what you're thinking... how undemocratic. I feel like a prisoner, trapped amongst the walls of my house, and forced participate in my parents' 'orthodox' view of the world. I love my long hair... seriously. It's shoulder length, dark and curly - like Jim Morrison's. Even girls have started to look at me more... well I guess they couldn't exactly look at me any less - with short hair, I look like such a fooking geek. I've said many a times I don't want it cut yet, but my dad went along and booked an appointment... I mean, I'm 16 years old - surely I'm able to decide how I look myself? It's horrendous. Do you think my parents are being rash here? If so, any ideas on how I could escape this controversy? WHY DO PARENTS FORCE 17 YEAR OLD'S TO CUT THEIR HAIR?
Im 17 but my parents hate my hair being long cuz i started straightening it when i was 15 cuz I have sumwhat wavy hair but I take good care of it the prob is that they hate it when my bangs get to long and my mom is a stereotype that she thinks i look emo which is not a fashion in my opinion i hate having to deal with them yelling at me and IM 17! im almost 18 and my mom is weird cuz she tries filling my head with lies like how i can't leave the house cuz when im 18 it still doesn't mean im an adult -_- plus she's taken me to a theropist and they say im fine but she likes to say im not but shes that one tht has promblems and my dad to Im not cuting my hair though yet my dad beat me cuz i didnt but im not a child anymore when i was a kid i always did what they said but i wasn't HAPPY now that i can wear my own clothes and have the hair i want it im happy but their not and i have to be forced to change to make them happy but i won't do it cause that just sounds dumb iv already pleased them as a child im almost 18 i want to make my decisions =/
What should I do if my parents force me to have my hair cut, but I think my hair is not that long?
I’m a hairstylist and I have seen your problem more times than I can count. For your sake, I would aim for a compromise. Don’t be stressed if your parents keep using the word “cut”. Find some pictures in magazines or online of what you want your hair to look like. What look are you aiming for? Show your parents. Tell them you think you could use a trim up too. Tell them this is the style you want ( show your pic) then say you know it could use a shape up. Hair doesn’t just grow out from a short cut into a perfectly shaped long style. This is how many ugly things happen. When you get to the salon, show them all your pictures. Have them repeat back to you what it is you want, to make sure they understand and this prevents accidents and miscommunication. Longer hair can use a trim, it doesn’t need to be cut short. Good luck. This is possible. You could even go talk to a hairstylist one day without your parents. Do a consultation with someone. Walk in. Go somewhere you feel comfortable and tell them what you need and what’s going on. They will help. I have faith in my fellow stylists. As a group we have saved many young people from terrible, parent forced cuts.

Oh my, stand up for what you beleive in. Trust me my mom is SO stubborn she never let me dye my hair get piercings or wear makeup until l was like 14. I tol my mom let me be me! tell them This is who i am take it or leave it im not going to change for anybody im being myself & thats not hurting anyone. Act like u dont care about the laptop & video gamea say if i have to be sacraficing things to express myself and be myself so be it im going to stand up for myself.

In America, do parents have the right to force kids to get a haircut?
In America parents have the legal right to do pretty much what they want in caring for their children. If your parents think it’s best your hair be cut, yes they can force a haircut on you. Whether that’s right or not is immaterial. It is what it is. Fighting against reality will get you nowhere.You have a legal right to an education. You have a legal right to be safe from harm. That’s about it.I can pretty much guarantee that you won’t get anywhere arguing from a rights point of view since, other than the above, you don’t have any. (Which might be a good motivation to get involved with Youth rights. Though you’d need to think bigger than your own perceived right to wear your hair the way you want to.)You can’t present an effective case unless you understand why your parents want your hair cut. What are their concerns? What do they picture happening if you don’t have your hair cut?Then you need to treat their concerns with compassion. Not because your parents are right. But because that’s how they feel. Sometimes concerns are irrational! But being told one’s concerns are dumb just makes people cling tighter to them. You won’t persuade them to ease up unless you treat the concerns as important to them.What can you offer to ease their concerns? What would they like to see from you?What are your own concerns with the way they want your hair cut that might appeal to them? Are kids making fun of you? Do you know some nice kids who have hair the way you want to wear yours?These are skills that are useful for a lifetime. Get to know why people are objecting. Really get to understand their point of view and why it’s important to them. Asking people to step outside their comfort zone so you can be more comfortable will rarely get you anywhere. Get to understand their comfort zone so you can present your own needs so they feel less uncomfortable to them.

Hey!! I have i got some horrid hair cut stories for you! well, so i was probably 8 years old that age where you wanna fit in and be cool and stuff so i felt like my hair wasn't looking to great so i didnt' know what to do. My parents weren't home just my 11 year old sister. I asked what to do with my hair and she said i'll cut. BIG MISTAKE RIGHT THERE!! She took a bowl and gave me a bowl cut and i'm a girl!!!! I thought i looked like a murshroom my sister was laughing like crazy. So my parents came home and well lets say it got worse WAY worse. My mom tried to fix it so she took sister and started clipping but she didn't relieize there was gum on the scissors!! How could she miss it!!! Ugh i'm embrassed just thinking bout it so there i was with a bowl cut and gum in my hair. My dad actually thought it looked good. Looking back on it my hair looked really good before it was cut!! Haha that reminds me of another one. So my sister who was 26 was getting married. My mom wanted me to look great for the wedding my hair was long and super pretty but i got it cut. We went into the salon and i figured i was just getting a trim. Just then my mom called the hair cutter lady over and they started whrisping. Little did i know my mom was telling her to give me a haircut above my ears. She figured it was in style! ugh it looked horrible i didn't have any curves so i looked like a boy and yes i'll admit that!! And just one more lol, So as i got older i wanted to get layers but my mom said no because i just got my hair cut like not too long ago so i wanted to cut my own layers so basically i took scissors and started chopping big sections off like a lawnmower and it was soooo ugly like uneven everywhere! Plus, i messed up my bangs so my mom had to cut them off so it was just spicky little sections at the top of my head!!
