Is It Hot In California In February

How hot is Australia compared to California?

Melbourne and Canberra are by no means the coldest places in Australia. Melbourne gets somewhat bleak in winter but in summer it is hot and dry. 10% of maximum temperatures in Melbourne in summer are over 35°C and the hottest was 46.8°C in February 2009. Melbourne is hotter than Sydney or Brisbane.

California goes as far south as about 32°N. In Australia, 32°S is about Taree, some 200km north of Sydney. More than half of Australia is closer to the equator than any part of California. Northern California is equivalent to Hobart in Tasmania.

California has some hot spots such as Death Valley, the hottest and driest place in the USA. Death Valley is 7800 square kilometres. Central Australia, which gets temperatures similar to those in Death Valley, is 3.5 million square kilometres

Why is it so hot and dry in southern California?

It's in the 90s.. in February.

I'm getting a little concerned. I thought we were supposed to have a cold and wet winter, but it's hot and it hasn't rained. What happened to El Nino?

When is the spring in California?

Most of California has a so-called Mediterranean climate: rain in the northern hemisphere winter and no rain (at all) the rest of the year. And it does get cooler during the winter. But as James Pearl says, it varies a great deal from one part of the state to another. Inland, like in the Central Valley, the temperature swings are more extreme while the coasts tend to be cool and foggy year round. The Sierras have a true 4 season climate with snow in the winter and thunderstorms in the summer, and the deserts (like the Mojave and Death Valley) are drier than dry all the time except for occasional thunderstorms in the summer. So, when is spring? Depends on where you are, and how warm you think spring should be. I grew up in New England, and to me it's spring 9 months a year where I live in the Bay Area, and there is no winter like I think of it.Hope that helps.

Why is Southern California warm in the winter while most of the country has a freeze alert?

A couple reasons:The modulating influence of the Pacific OceanThe global circulation pattern, with global highs (sinking air means warm temps) around 30° longitudeThe wavelength of the jet stream is about 3000 miles. When the west is under a high, chances are the east is under a low. The u-shaped curve of the jet stream is approximately where the low sits. The ‘hat' shape of the jet is close to the high. When theres a high over Utah/Colorado, the weather pattern can last many weeks. It brings warm, dry winds called Santa Anas & keeps the storms to the north of usAlso, it's not always warm here. Last week, we had a fairly large storm with snow in the higher elevations. And, Southern California has a bunch of micro-climates. At the same time, it can be foggy & cold at the beach, sunny & warm 10 miles inland, dry & cool (40-50°F) at the high deserts, & below freezing as you get into the mountains. All within 100 miles. I bet the ski resorts are cold enough to be making their own snow now.I'm not as familiar with the causes of the climate east of the Rockies. The influence of the warmer waters of the Gulf of Mexico & the arctic air flow over a nearly flat topography complicates things.

Why do people think California is always sunny and hot?

Well as for the sunny part, it because California IS sunny most of the time.Annual Days of Sunshine in California - Current ResultsAs you can see, across the state, the number of sunny days clocks in at around 260 days.As for the hot part, most of the state has an average temp of 80F:Weather & Timing Your VisitMuch of California has a Mediterranean-like climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. On the coast, the average daily high temperature hovers around 70°F/21°C and up), but can occasionally spike to 80°F 27° C or more on hottest summer days; freezing temperatures are rare, even in winter. The state’s legendary fog often hugs the coast from roughly Monterey north, usually during summer months; it often burns off by midday before rolling in again at dusk. Farther inland, summers are hot and dry, winters cool and wet, with occasional brilliant blue days and temperatures cold enough to freeze puddles on the ground, but not much more than that. At higher altitudes, the weather reflects more of a four-season cycle, with beautiful summers, striking fall color, and cold, snowy winters followed by snowmelt springs (waterfall season!).I live in the Bay Area—it is Feburary, and for this entire week, it has been in the high 70s to 80s in the East Bay, where I live. It is warm outside, and sunny and clear. I was tempted to wear shorts this last weekend, but since it is still February, I would have been cold once the sun started setting. This isn’t the norm for this time of year, typically temps are about 10–15 degrees cooler, but it is typically sunny even in winter.Yes, the stereotype of sunny California that you see on TV does have truth to it—and it is part of the reason California has been one of the most populous states for decades.

Can you swim in las vegas pools in february?

You'll be fine. At worst you may feel a little chilly as you get out of the pool, but as long as it's a heated pool you can always wear a towel as you get out and jump into a heated jacuzzi nearby, which will definitely make you feel the heat again!

Why does Laredo and McAllen Texas get so hot during certain days in the winter and spring ?

And is it just a coinisicende that the days in which temperatures - which have been as hot as the mid 90's in January, and 103 in February (last month on the 28th - during yet another severe event in the south east) and 106 in March.
Now, it is not extremely often that we have these extremes, but we do, especially in La Nina winters, such as this one.
Also, every single time it becomes extremely hot in South Texas in the winter/spring, there is a severe weather event happening in the Southeast. Every single time! Today was no exception. It was 95 in Laredo and 94 in McAllen.
Oddly enough, these heatwaves never reach the Houston area or Victoria. They do reach Corpus Christi and Brownsville though.
I know of no other area in the U.S., except maybe Southern California where temperatures of 95 or greater can happen any month of the year.
In fact, South Texas holds the records for January, February, and March heat, all in the Laredo area. 98 in January! 103 in February! 106 in March!
In fact, the hottest temperatue EVER recorded in many areas of south Texas have occured in March, April or May!
