Is it legal to build your own rifle from scratch without going through a federal firearms licensed dealer at all?

“Is it legal to build your own pistol at home without going through a federal firearms licensed dealer at all?”Yes. Except possibly in a few deep-Blue States like California.Google “80% 1911”. You will find people who will sell you a block of metal that is most of the way to being the frame for a Colt M1911 semi-automatic pistol. They will also sell you bits, jigs, and instructions for finishing it into a 100% complete frame. Then you can buy the rest of the parts you need, individually or as a kit (Google “1911 build kit”).You need $500-$1000 in parts, a few $1000’s of capital equipment, and machining skills that used to be taught in high school metal shop (now in Community College). You can do the same for Glock handguns and probably some others. Also AR-15 and AK-47 rifles. When you are all done, you have a completely functional modern firearm, which you never went through a background check for and never registered with the government. You can never transfer it to anyone else, and you can’t make a gun that would have been illegal for you to buy from a licensed dealer.Warning: Liberals and Democrats are becoming aware of all of this and they hate it. Be sure to research your local laws before you begin.

Can I legally make my own fully automatic gun from scratch?

Certainly, if you pay for a tax stamp for the weapon first and pay for a Special Occupation Tax. And if you’re making that machine gun for a governmental agency (federal, state or local).Otherwise, no. Making a machine gun requires a Special Occupation Tax for person building that gun (or their business) and as said above, the weapon has to be for a governmental entity.Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and ExplosivesNow, you can legally build any non-NFA firearm that you desire, although the BATFE strongly recommends a maker mark (think of it as your brand name) and a serial number. You don’t need a serial number for a personal use firearm, but if you sell it, it’ll need to have a serial number.Does an individual need a license to make a firearm for personal use?Oh, there’s another thing to consider. Owning the components of a machine gun and possessing a firearm that can be converted may be considered “Constructive Possession”. That means that the BATFE can and will “throw the book at you”.

Is it illegal to build a firearm from scratch?

I have been looking all around and I cannot get a straight answer. I live in Louisiana and I, for a while, have been wanting to build a completely original gun from scratch. Is there any law against this? I WILL NOT be selling or anything like that. The gun will be for my use only.

Does scratching the serial number off a handgun make it illegal?

It is ILLEGAL and a violation of Federal Law to remove or alter a firearm serial number in ANY way. It is punishable by Jail time in a Federal lock-up for up to 15 years or a $10,000 fine or BOTH. These charges are independant of, and in addition to any violations of state criminal statutes that are violated

Note* Removing a serial number by grinding or scratching it off doesn't work anyway. Advances in forensic science can now recover the serial number regardless........

Is it Legal to have a handgun with the serial number scratched off?

my grandfather recently passed away and he left me a small shoe box with some stuff in it. it had some old pictures and $500 cash and a ww2 medal but he also left me a glock 19 in the box with 2 clips but the serial number on the gun is scratched off. i cant imagine why he would have a gun with the number scratched off cause he wasnt a criminal kind of person. he was a plant flowers in his garden kind of guy and go to church every sunday. is this legal for me to have? cause its not like i bought it or stole it and i would never want to get rid of it cause i only have a ww2 medal and some pictures and this gun left from my grandpap

Is it illegal to make hand guns?

In the US, it is legal for a individual to manufacture a firearm for his own use provided that:the individual is not a person for who possession of firearms is illegal under law (is not a convicted felon, has not been adjudicated mentally unstable, has not been treated for substance abuse, etc.),the firearm does not fall into one of the restricted categories under the National Firearms Act (isn't fully automatic, isn't a short-barrelled shotgun or rifle, doesn't exceed .50 caliber, etc.). andthe individual is not in the business of manufacturing firearms for sale or distribution.https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/...https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/...https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/...OTOH, it's not all that difficult to obtain a manufacturer's license:https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/...https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/...

Is it Legal to have a handgun with the serial number scratched off?

Okay, stop giving more info here. I didn't even read your entire question, but the first sentence is good enough. Depending on the state you are at, dial up as many appraisal companies (not to be mistaken with home appraisals!) and see what they can tell you about this gun. Probably a better place would be a long established and/ or reputable gun store--where they can handle the weapon more safely.

Reason I tell you all this is because you might be holding a valuable piece in your hands. Don't handle it too much, just in case the authorities would want to fingerprint it or something. That in itself would help "clear" you of any wrong doing, and as a matter of fact, do you know any lawyers? Any lawyer who wouldn't charge you an arm and a leg for just about anything? Consult this with him or her.

This is a really interesting story. Also, if there is any "real" antiques store in your city or town, make sure to have them see the gun--in case the other appraisal people can't do anything with it. REMEMBER, make sure that gun is safe first of all!!!

P.S. These are just basic ideas I'm giving you, in case the gun is indeed important to anyone for whatever reasons and you can make some money out of it at some point. Whatever you do DO NOT sell this to just anyone, specially without consulting an attorney--remember it is a weapon, and it's got the numbers scratched off!!!

Can you make a gun from scratch, at what point is it considered a firearm, and what regulations would it have to follow?

Yes, you can make a gun from scratch, as others here have noted. We define a firearm as an object that can propel a projectile through a barrel by means of an explosion. However, an object need not actually reach the point of being able to propel a projectile to be considered a firearm, at least under United States laws and regulations. For example, the ATF identifies a fully milled AR15 lower receiver as a firearm and regulates it as such, even if there are no trigger parts in the receiver and the receiver is not attached to an upper receiver. In this case the empty, fully milled lower receiver is the serialized component of the AR15. A partially milled lower receiver is not a firearm, and is not serialized, because owner of that receiver must complete the milling process before the receiver can accept all the components needed to make the lower receiver capable of being mated to an upper receiver with all the necessary parts to allow the weapon to fire a projectile.Another example is a removable chassis from a semi-auto pistol. The chassis contains all or most of the trigger parts and will be the serialized portion of the pistol and is the actual firearm, not the other components, such as the barrel, grips, etc. Because the chassis can be removed and installed in other pistols, the ATF regulates the chassis as a firearm, even if it’s not installed in a pistol. With such a chassis in hand, you can buy barrels, frames, grips, sights, etc., without having to undergo background checks for these individual components. The chassis, on the other hand, will require a background check for purchase by itself.

If you would make your own country from scratch would you make guns legal or illegal?

It all depends on the type of Country it was to be.If this Country was to be governed by a Tyrannical Dictator: Guns would be ILLEGAL except for the military and police…like Nazi Germany. If the Country was to be Governed as a Constitutional Republic based on Freedom and Liberty, gun would have to be legal. What do these mass-shootings have in common: "Gun Free" San Ysidro McDonald's, “Gun Free” Columbine, “Gun Free” Sandy Hook, “Gun Free” Luby's massacre, “Gun Free” Edmond Oklahoma Post Office Shooting, “Gun Free” Virginia Tech, "Gun Free" University of Arizona College of Nursing, "Gun Free" University of Alabama (Huntsville), "Gun Free" Northern Illinois University, "Gun Free" Umpqua Community College, “Gun Free” Fort Hood, “Gun Free” Century theater in Aurora, "Gun Free" Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, "Gun Free" Chattanooga Recruiting Center, "Gun Free" San Bernardino Inland Regional Center, "Gun Free" Pulse, “Gun Free” Gabby Giffords meet-n-greet.CORRECT! Most PASSED background checks to obtain their guns so that’s something in common. But there’s more: They were all “Gun Free”. How’d that work out for the victims?Where has the cowardly and illogical ideology of "The more helpless you are when attacked with deadly intent, the SAFER you are!" actually saved lives? It doesn't work for 4-legged-sheep; it doesn't work any better for the 2-legged sheep either.
