Is It Legal To Adopt A Pig In New York

Is it legal to own a penguin in New York State?

Actually, yes it is. It is just very hard to find someone who breeds penguins. Also, they do not make very good pets. I used to volunteer at a local zoo (Cleveland Metroparks) and somebody who worked there had adopted one of the baby penguins, which is very rare because not many people own them. It took a lot of his time and money to care for it. They only eat fish, which are not very cheap, and they must live in a very cold climate. Also, as a baby, it was so cute and lovable/playful. But once it hit about 5 it only liked its owner, and nobody else. It also was very moody and demanding. And it started getting sick which ran the vet bills way up. When it turned 6 she wanted to give it back to the zoo because it costed her about $50000 to care for just 1 penguin all those years. And she loved the experience, but would NEVER reccomend a penguin as a pet, ever. They are very time consuming, and costly, and just do not belong in captivity. Unless at a zoo, once it went back to the zoo it seemed much more happy, and became nicer even.

And also, Penguins are legal in the united states, but not necesarily New York. Many exotic animals are illegal in New York like monkeys, but I have them here in Ohio. So I am not really sure about New York, but if you call your local Wildlife Center or even police department then they will happy to tell you. Good luck.

Are potbelly pigs legal in...New York,New Jersey or Pa?

They would be regulated under the local laws. Your friend would have to check her county and township zoning laws or health code. If she lives in the city, she would have to check either animal control code, health code or zoning code.

A lot of times, livestock is banned in cities. They do sometimes make exceptions for potbelly pigs though.

Can u own a mini pop belly pigs in Long Island, New York?

it depends on which county and town you live in. please, before you get a pig, do some research. they average 125lbs and have very specific needs. i suggest http://www.pigs.org/article.asp?article_id=3 as a start. this is where my pig ended up living, after he became too aggressive for me to handle. i lived at this sanctuary for a year doing full time rescue and care giving. i learned a lot. if you still want a pig, after doing all the research and finding a vet, maybe you'd like to adopt a pair in need of a good home. good luck.

Teacup pigs and allergies?

My brother has asthma so he is allergic to dander, dust mites, and all that stuff found in normal pets. Teacup pigs are said to have hair so they are apparently non-allergenic but my mom is worried about my brother and i don't want a pet pig if it will cause my brother discomfort. Help please..
Thanks!

Are ferrets illegal in Brooklyn?

Unfortunately for your friend, ferrets cannot legally be kept as pets in New York City. The health code prohibits keeping as pets "All fur bearing mammals of the family Mustelidae, including, but not limited to, weasel, marten, mink, badger, ermine, skunk, otter, pole cat, zorille, wolverine, stoat and ferret." You can see the full text of the law at http://www.nycacc.org/nychealthcode.htm .

Some people keep pet ferrets in violation of the law. However, it's a bad idea to get a ferret when living in NYC, because there's just too much chance of the ferret's presence being discovered and reported to New York Animal Care & Control, who could then seize the poor ferret and potentially even kill her.

Please suggest to your friend that she adopt a pet other than a ferret from an animal shelter. Shelters in the NYC area have available all sorts of small and furry pets, including hamsters, guinea pigs and a staggering number of rabbits. You and other people wanting to buy birthday presents for your friend could then purchase supplies for the pet.

By the way, if your friend is a renter, one thing she should check on is what kinds of pets are permitted by her landlord. A LOT of pets end up in shelters because landlords discover them and order their guardians to get rid of them right away.

Is it legal to own a pet otter?

Absolutely not.Otters are a protected species and it is 100% illegal to have a North American otter as a pet.In most states it is 100% illegal to have an otter of any species as a pet, due to their highly destructive nature, and the danger to livestock they pose. A very few allow an exotic, like an African, with a permit. In the words of people who own African Clawless Otters, “Otters are like ferrets on crack.” So if you don’t like the idea of everything you own being turned into something the otter can play with or destroy…..- Some Otters Produce a pungent smell and they do spray it just like the skunk’s spray. There are outside animals and not trained to stay indoors.  - Some Otters bite. They have claws and sharp teeth.  - All otters are nocturnal and they tend to look for food at night. This means that while you are trying to sleep, they are tearing up your house.  - All otters need water. If you have a pool for them, it is no surprise to seem them engulfed in it. Hope to have a river nearby if you insist.  - Be prepared to have a sufficient stock of fish. Otters eat 15-25 percent of their body weight a day and can spend as much as 5 hours hunting for food. Can you keep a month’s worth of whole fish in your freezer? Can you afford that much whole fish? Do you know where to get whole fish?Do you have a vet who is willing to treat your otter? Are you prepared to never take a vacation day as long as the otter is alive? If you are in a state that allows exotics with a permit, that permit applies only to you and your domicile. You cannot leave it with a pet sitter. There are no boarding facilities for otters. You cannot travel with it: the permit applies only to your domicile.

Can I own a pet pig in Buffalo, NY?

If you live in the city/suburbs you may need to contact the city...if its not legal I think permits can be requested if you really want one. They aren't necessarily livestock but I think city laws treat them in this manner. Hope this helps!
