Is It Legal To Own A Sword In Mi

Is it legal to own a sword in the UK?

Certainly. If my wife’s uncle chose to pass on the family swords to her, for example, she’d have a few antique Japanese swords, & it’d be perfectly legal for her to own & import them. She’d be in trouble if she started waving ’em around in public, or even carrying them in public without a good reason (there are legitimate reasons), but owning them? No problem at all!Others have mentioned re-enactors. If one attends re-enactment of a Civil War battles, for example, there’ll be lots of people wandering around carrying swords, & they’ll be the personal property of the re-enactors. Sometimes they’ll be camping on the battle site, doing re-enactments daily for a few days, in which case there’ll be a field full of tents occupied by people with swords, pikes, matchlock muskets & pistols, etc.Times have changed, though. A bloke I used to know at school was once stopped by police on his way home from a re-enactment. He was in full civil war rig, including his sword (scabbarded, of course), & a bit pissed. It was in Aylesbury Market Square IIRC. They asked him what he was doing with the sword. He drew himself up & said “Sirs! It is an article of a gentleman’s dress”. They laughed & told him to go home, & next time tie it into the scabbard. I think they’d be stricter these days, & might take it off him & tell him to collect it from the police station when he sobered up, & tie it into the scabbard before taking it.

Is it legal to carry a sword in public?

This happened to me once. In highschool I had a katana and a friend and I decided to take a walk at night. He took the Katana with him, just for something to hold. We got 1/2 of a block away from my house when we were stopped by an officer, and told to get on the ground. He apparently called for backup, as soon there were 3 other cop cars on the scene. They took my friend into custody at the station. They released him after a couple of hours. I believe they charged him with public mischief, or some other very small misdemeanor. He had to pay a fine and do some community service. It took the police a while to come up with what to cite him with, but they were pretty sure they wanted to cite him with something.So... I would recommend against carrying a sword in public.

Swords in Michigan?

Couldn't find anything in the Michigan Compiled Laws that says you can't own a sword (or that you need a permit), but carrying one in public, concealing one, assaulting someone with a sword, or possessing one in an airport or in a public school is DEFINITELY a crime.

Is it legal in Japan to carry a sword in public?

No it isn't. In fact, the traditional Japanese sword is all but banned in Japan. Only a very small number of certified individuals are permitted to own a live blade. All of this goes back to the disarmament of Japan after WW2.But, you may say, what about practitioners of kenjutsu, iaido and other traditional sword arts, can't they have swords? Well, high ranking practitioners are, indeed, often permitted to own swords although they cannot carry them around in the street. Most practitioners of the sword arts, however, are only permitted to own and use blunt aluminium alloy blades. If the police catch you with a steel sword in Japan, they will seize it on the spot, there is really no tolerance for swords being carried in public at all. Even an aluminum iaito must be carried wrapped in a proper sword bag at all times and cannot be visibly identifiable as a weapon.Japanese policing is very strict when it comes to carrying weapons. The general rule of thumb is no weapons of any kind in any public place.

Can I carry swords in Michigan?

Nope ,cant legally carry a fixed blade knife with a blade over 2" or a folding knife with a blade over 4" concealed in most places, also carrying a exposed fixed blade knife with a lenth over 4" is usually restricted to use/purpose , meaning you can get by with carrying a 6" hunting knife while hunting and going to and from during season, or a fillet knife while fishing or actively cleaning fish, but you cant just run around with it on your hip . Mostly the idea of a concealed weapon is the general public cant be aware of it or threatend by it, you dont know someone has a legal concealed handgun in their possession, everyone can see the sword and its tacit threat of violence if they dont do whatever you say,so anything you do with anyone any discussion you would have or whatever isnt one equal person to another, its an armed person confronting everyone else, thats the same reason you cant carry your license self defense gun in plain sight or make any gesture to show anyone you have one except in defense from immediate great bodily harm, you cant even put your hand on your gun or show it in a confrontation as a deterent legally, unless it has reached the point where using a deadly weapon would be legal,if you brandish it as a deterent to a possible threat or to deter what might be a threat, your the one going to jail,it has to be a clear cut thatyou life was indanger or you risked great bodily harm ,without any way to avoid it,to be justified in exposing your weapon.Generally if you had alegit reason to show it,you had cause to and did use it.

Are cane/umbrella swords legal with out a permit in Michigan?

I don't know the exact laws for your state, but I do know that a cane sword would be considered a concealed weapon. most states make you apply for a concealed weapons permit. Also allot of states have a law saying that your blade may only be some many inches long, usually 3-5".

I would just call up your local police station and tell who ever picks up that you want to know the law for your area

Is it legal to own and use a halberd on your own property in Michigan?

I am looking to get a Guan Dao. It is a halberd (pole arm) totaling 6.5 feet in length, with a blade close to 2 feet long. First of all, is it legal to own one in Michigan? Second, would I be able to train with it in my back yard legally?
I have searched through Michigan laws pertaining to weapons, and the only things I could find were laws on concealing/open carrying firearms and knives. I have found no information on bladed weapons other than knives.
Just as an added note, I am licensed to carry firearms concealed. I know the laws pertaining to firearms.

Is is true that you can legally make your own weapons? Does this extend to high quality mimics of actual firearms using 3D printers or custom hand designs? Would making a firearm this way allow you to legally make it fully automatic?

Within the United States, it is generally legal to make any firearm you could purchase. While laws by state vary, on the basic federal level you can manufacture anything you like without a permit as long as you don't violate the National Firearms Act. In essence, this means you must file and get approved lengthy legal paperwork for any of the following: silencers, fully automatic and burst fire weapons, destructive devices, short barreled shotguns and rifles, miscellaneous "Any Other Weapons".On the other hand, you can build any of the following without any paperwork whatsoever: rifles, pistols, revolvers, shotguns, black powder weapons. The quality and method by which you produce a firearm is not regulated as of yet.

Legality of swords in public specifically Michigan?

Are you allowed to carry a sword in the streets in Michigan, now before you guys go all nuts I want to ask, do you require any kind of permit? I know it's probably not legal to just walk out of your home with a sword on your belt but I mean is there some legal way? Just kind of curious. And there really is no real information when I search it.
