Is It Normal After Having Back Surgery To Pee And Defcate On Yourself

Do patients ever urinate or defecate during surgery? What happens if a woman is on her period and doesn’t use a tampon?

Nature in her wisdom has created a neural circuit that is always on. Muscles supplied by this circuit are always clenched. This circuit is referred to by over-educated individuals as a tonic circuit. These tonic circuits are wired to both your bladder and your anal sphincter. In order to pee or poo you have to consciously turn off that circuit and allow the muscles of your urethra or anus to relax and let the bad stuff flow out. These switches are under conscious control.Anesthesia, whether regional or general, puts only parts of your nervous system to sleep. For whatever reason when your consciousness is removed you can’t consciously relax your sphincters. If you die they will let go eventually, but I try not to let that happen too much. The upshot of this answer is that unless you have nerve or muscle damage to those structures you DO NOT pee or poop during surgery. However, there are always exceptions.—Women with bladder control issues. Increases in abdominal pressure can overcome the sphincter’s ability to stop leaks.—Baby’s head coming through the birth canal. There’s only room for one baby in the pelvis. Pee and poo get ejected. Think twice before filming this.—Rectum full of stool can sometimes get loose if a GI stimulant such as Neostigmine are used. This happens rarely. How do we in surgery deal with this as well as torrential menstruation? Chux. I don’t know who invented this but she or he definitely makes our patient care easier. (Chux is a name like Kleenex, don’t know who makes them)This is placed beneath every patient’s danger zone during every case. It is hella absorbent and waterproof on the back. In the unlikely event of a code yellow or code brown the patient is washed down with wet cloths and the pad is chucked into the trash. Generally before they wake up.For menstruating patients we generally place a pad (known as a peri-pad) over the offending orifice in addition to the chux.Foley catheters are used less and less because of infection issues. I generally only place them for cases lasting more than 3 hours. If necessary we will straight cath the patient’s bladder before they are awake. This should make for fascinating conversation at your next dinner party. Cheers!

Helping myself poop....? Is this normal?

You probably have a slight rectocele. This happens because of the delivery. The muscular layer beneath the posterior vaginal wall is weakened and allows the distal sigmoid colon to slightly herniate or bulge into the vagina. When you put your finger in your vagina and push, it reduces this slight herniation and allows your stool to have a straighter shot to your rectum.

If it becomes problematic, there is a simple surgical procedure called a "posterior repair" that can fix this condition!

The same thing can happen to the anterior vaginal wall that allows the bladder to sag into the vagina. This condition is called a "cystocele." Sagging of the bladder can sometimes put a little "kink" in the urethra that makes it hard to hold your urine or cause stress incontinence, (peeing slightly when you cough, sneeze or sometimes laugh.) This also can be corrected with a procedure called an "anterior repair." A lot of times you will hear of women going in for an A&P Repair. This is what they are having done, both at the same time.

Hope that answers your question!

How likely is it that I'll poop or pee myself during oral surgery where general anesthesia is used?

There is one amazing answer that talks about the 2 classes of drugs used in surgery, so I will not cover that. I will cover personal experience.I also will need to be put under for dental surgery (general anesthesia) soon. This includes nasal (instead of oral) intubation (a tube through which to breathe via ventilator). I have had shoulder surgery while under the same type of anesthesia, and I was allowed to leave my underwear on, and my physical therapist (whom I worked in the same office in an on-site medical clinic in a factory), & asked to be present for my surgery, she held my hand until I was out. I asked her (was new to surgery, then) if they used a urinary catheter (sort of embarrassed if she would have seen), and she said no. It was 3-4 hours long, and I had to pee like mad when I woke up, from the fluids they pumped in! It was like waking up from a nap. A very violent nap...I HURT.Good luck!

How long can a cat go without using the litter box to urinate ? and defecate?

I suppose a cat can wait a while, albeit uncomfortably, without defecating, just like we could. Urinating is another issue. Not urinating, more likely not being able to urinate, can cause an electrolyte imbalance in the body that can lead to internal organ failure and heart failure. This is why when male cats get blocked and strain to pee it is a true emergency and they have to be taken to the vet immediately. In your cat's case, she wasn't given food or water for about 8 to 12 hours before her surgery (as is protocol) and unless she was given fluids intravenously during surgery she stayed waterless until she woke up. When she woke up she probably didn't feel much like eating or drinking anything as anesthesia ususally takes about 24 hours to wear off. And unless she was on pain medication after surgery she probably wasn't feeling so hot. It most likely took her while to drink. No drinking means no urine. If she is in good health otherwise and young, it is not that unusual.

Can my cat still pee after being neutered?

He hasnt been neutered just yet, maybe 2 days from now. He is abour 4 months old. So, can he still pee/poo after the surgery?
Any other information I should know about caring for neutered cat? He is my very first cat.

Thank you.
