Is It Ok To Water Our Garden With Water From The Washing Machine

Can you hook a garden hose to a washing machine?

The dumbass that I bought my house from cut the hose from the cold water faucet for the washer leaving the screw on there. Now, it's rusted on there and I have to somehow remove it without damaging the copper. I have a pretty complex (stupid) piping job.

So, my question is; I ran the garden house from my backyard into my back garage door. Then, I attached that to my cold water hose for the washer and attached the cold water hose to the washer.

Is this going to be an ok TEMPORARY fix, or is this something that nobody should do. I looked online, and am getting different answers. Please help quickly!

Thank you,
Taylor

Boiling water and a washing machine. Is it okay?

Okay so i am not trying to ask a stupid question, yes I know that washing machines have a hot cycle. However when we ran water to our machine we just ran cold cause that is usually what I wash in. I am boiling water to wash the dog beds, toys, and all of our bedding and linens because I am worried they are infested with mites (the dogs are going to the vet). Anyway I wash curious what point is to hot for a washing machine. I was going to pour the boiling water into it to wash the bedding and things.

How do I reuse water from washing machine?

Back in the day, some washing machines had a cycle/setting called "suds saver".  This dumped the wash or rinse water from the tub into a secondary drain line that could be diverted to a large sink basin; rather than being drained into the household sanitary drainage line.  This allowed you to use the same wash water twice, before letting it drain from the sink to the sanitary (sewer) line. These days, you can also recycle what is called "grey water".  That is; instead of flushing that used wash or rinse water down the drain, you could divert it to a filtered cistern, or an irrigation system, and use it to water your lawn and/or garden.Something like this:(With thanks to Mother Earth News.)

My neighbor lets the water out from his washing machine into the yard; how worried should I be that the detergents and bleach are going to corrode the foundation of my house?

This is an interesting question that raises more legal considerations than health issues.  First, this is a grey water system of sorts, as Jeremy has pointed out.  The problem with the way your neighbor is using his grey water leads me to believe that grey water systems are not allowed where you live.Properly designed grey water systems typically use waste water from the washing machine, tub/shower, and sometimes the lavatories and are designed and built into the home during the initial building phase.  Note that there are no water sources where food particles are possible like the kitchen sink or the dishwasher, and no black water from the toilets.  Grey water systems are permitted and regulated by either zoning, building regulations or CC&R's in your neighborhood.  The fact that your neighbor is dumping this water on the surface tells me that it is not allowed and that his action is illegal. Additionally, unless you live in a 'zero lot line' development, the water that comes within two feet of your house is trespassing on your property which is another violation of law.Depending upon where you live, the very act of dumping waste water on the ground may be a violation of the law.  A call to the building and zoning department is certainly in order for your edification.  What you do with the information is up to you and how strongly you feel about the rule of law as it applies to you as opposed to everyone else.

Can I just fill my washing machine with the garden hose?

you should be able to make up a female to female adapter at the hardware store. (make take a couple of different fittings). Just tell them what you are trying to do. It should be only a few bucks.

Then hook up the water to the cold input of the washer, turn the hose on and run as normal. (Cold water wash only). You won't have to stand there and get errors stop/start the machine etc.

Good luck!
One note: If you do it this way, make sure you turn your hose off if you're not using the washer. Would hate to see a burst hose while you're out shopping!

Can you connect a garden hose fitting to a washing machine fitting?

yes u defiantly can,,threads are the same

Washing machine - hot/cold water hoses?

is it okay to use the cold water hose for hot water on the washing machine? we had to replace our broken washer with another one, but the hot hose on the "newer" one was in bad shape, and the cold one on our broken one never worked anyway so we couldnt use that one either... so we have 2 cold water hoses on the working washing machine....

What do I do to drain water out of a washing machine if it stops working?

It is going to be a bit messy I am afraid. If the water will not drain out it means the water pump is not working. It is either burned out or blocked with fibres and won’t turn the impeller. You have to pull out the washing machine take off the back and disconnect the hose from the impeller. The water will start to drain from the drum so you need something under to catch all the water. There is going to be quite a lot depending on where the machine is in the cycle. Make sure the electricity is disconnected. Once the water is drained you can find out why the pump is not working. If the impeller is blocked then get all the crap out of it such as buttons, coins, fabric fibres etc. Make sure the impeller rotates freely after and then reconnect and see if it all works. If the electronics is broken the symptoms could be the same but the board would need replacing and not the pump components etcGood luck

I have been emptying my dehumidifier water into washing machine does this cause musty smelling towels/cloths?

Yes! If you want to recycle the water from your dehumidifer why not water plants with it.

Wash your towels with regular detergent and add to the water/detergent.... 1 Cup of regular baking soda... Run the cycle and use an extra rinse cycle yout towels should be fine.. Dry promptly..

good luck

Is it safe to divert water from washing machines and kitchen wash areas to water harvest pits?

I’m not sure why I’ve been asked to answer this, but every place I’ve been at where they reuse greywater (water from showers and washing) to irrigate food crops has had rules about certain chemicals that can’t be used in soaps and detergents. You don’t want persistent chemicals and if you are growing organically you don’t want to water your garden with water containing soaps that break down into chemical fertilisers. The same rules don’t apply when using greywater to flush toilets. So the question to consider is what you are adding to the water and what you will subsequently be using the water for. Washing potatoes from your garden in a bowl of tapwater and then using the water to irrigate your garden should be fine. But if you wash potatoes you’ve bought from elsewhere the dirty water is likely to contain chemicals and possibly even weed seeds or plant pathogens. If you are in a special ecosystem or growing organically that may be a consideration, if not it is just slightly muddy water and fine for watering your garden.
