Is It Ok To Wear Clear Retainer During The Day And Hawley Metal One At Night

Hawley or essix retainer, which one to wear?

i got my braces off this may, and for 3 months I wore my essix retainers. then i got my hawley one. i wear my hawley one at night, but in the morning i like to switch to my essix retainer, but when i put them on they feel REALLY tight, and they hurt. so which retainer should i stick with? thanx

Why did my orthodontist tell me to only wear my retainer at night? Would it be bad if I always still wore it during the day? How many hours is he assuming at night?

Typical post treatment is six months of 24/7 and then nighttime wear after that. Wearing it more is not going to hurt, especially if it is a Hawley retainer (plastic and metal), but it won’t help either.Orthodontics is essentially causing major trauma to your mouth. It takes about 6–8 months for everything to heal and your teeth to be stable again. Back in the day, a patient was left in braces for that time period but now there is the big rush to get them off.Retainer wear is for the rest of your life. Teeth shift as we get older naturally, and if you have had Orthodontics the teeth “remember” where they used to be and try to get back. An invisible plastic thing will last 6–9 months before it needs replacement. A Hawley will last 10 years+.

What can you do if it really hurts to wear your retainer?

yeah, me too. i stopped wearing my retainers for about 7 months and i used to wear it religiously day and night. my front teeth shifted forward so i put it back on last night and it HURT LIKE HELL. but i went through it and there is some changes thank god.BUT, i think you're supposed to wear it during the day as well now…

Essix retainers vs hawley retainers?

Hello I just got my braces off and the ortho gave me a huge retainer and told me I had to wear it 24/7 for 2+ years and their is no wayI'm doing that. He was being an Jerk and I asked him for Essex retainers and he said that theirs cheap and that they won't "settle" or "retain" their shape and that it would be a compleat lose. I also asked if they even used those types of retainers ever and they said that they never didWhile another local ortho I called up and they told me that I could get Essex easily. He said he'd never have A patient complain about their teeth being bad because of the Essex. What should I do? Will Essex retainer ruin my teeth? Is the new ortho lying to get my money? He said only 150 for it and check ups and such. Some one help me because u look and sound ridiculous with that hawlfy retainer in my mouth!

My teeth are shifting even though I wear my retainer?

You should wear the retainer which is supposed to hold them in place until they are permanently in that position. It usually takes a year before you can go completely without the retainer. I had to get a permanent retainer or coaxial bar on my very front lower teeth. It is a thin small piece of wire glued behind my teeth that holds them in place. I don't have to take in or take out the retainer for the bottom. I no longer need the top one as it has been years. If you continue to have movement, this may be an option if the dentist is experienced in it.

Will I eventually be able to speak normally will a hawley retainer?

I had braces for the last 2.5 years, I am now 17 and on tuesday i got hawley retainers for the top and bottom. When I got home I was devastated because I could barely talk. I was hoping to get one of those invisible retainers or the permanent metal ones(but did not). Because I could not speak I did not wear my retainer to school Wed, thurs, and fri, (But I wore it religiously at home and at night). I asked my mom to call and ask the ortho to see if I could switch to a the invisible or metal permanent ones, and they said they do not offer them. :( It is now the weekend and I hope to practice speaking so by monday I can talk and wear it 24/7. But is this possible??? I know the orthos say just wait a few days, but please tell me the truth will I be able to speak normal? This is very stressful because I have a powerpoint presentation on either monday or tuesday and I need to be able to talk. And I certainly don't want to not wear it in fear of my teeth moving back. I have had braces before and never wore a retainer and had to start the process all over again. Or should I just not wear it when i'm in school, and wear it at home/night? Can someone please give me some advice it would help alot, thanks.

Why do my teeth shift even though I wear my retainers every night after my braces procedure? What can I do about it?

Your teeth shift even though you wear your retainers every night after getting braces off because of natural pressure of the bone and fibers around you teeth.Orthodontic treatment works to move teeth by:Placing pressure on the muscle and fibers around the teeth on one side…In turn the bone will resorb on the other side.Since the resorbed bone will take a very long time to grown in, there's always going to be movement. The only way to keep the movement to a minimum is to have a bonded retainer placed on your teeth after the braces come off. — For Adults, it is recommended that a permanent retainer stay in place forever if orthodontics were done at an adult age due to the fact that possibilities of shifting are greater due to the adult onset periodontal conditions such as grinding and other bad habits. For more information about retainers and the importance of wearing them, check out our post here: You Have to Wear Your Retainer! – Forever YoungYou can view all our Showcase Cases which include orthodontic patients on our Facebook Page - Case Of The Month. How to clean retainers and how often?

Remove and rinse your retainer. If you wear your retainer at night, take it off in the morning. Rinse it well with warm (not hot) running water.

Place the rinsed retainer into a cup filled with retainer cleaning solution. Examples of cleaning solution are: Retainer Brite, SonicBrite, Denta Clean, RetainerFresh or other similar products. Follow the instructions for whichever product you are using. If you wear your retainer 24/7, be sure to let them soak the full according to the instructions to get them totally clean (do not leave them soaking longer and do not let your retainers soak all day).

Rinse your retainer again with fresh running water. Then put it back into your mouth, or store it in a retainer case.

Clean your retainer in retainer cleaning solution at least once a day to keep it fresh and free from bacteria buildup and white plaque. In between cleanings, rinse your retainer with warm water when necessary (such as between meals when you are away from home).

You can occasionally use a toothbrush and toothpaste. (A toothbrush could put scratches on a clear Invisalign or clear Essix retainer). Each evening, scrub the retainer with a soft toothbrush and a small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste.

I hope that helped.

Which is better, a permanent retainer or removable one after having braces off?

All have their pluses and minuses, and it depends on what you mean by “"removable.” You can break them down into three types.Permanent: a lingual wire is bonded to your lower front six teeth. The plus is if teeth move, it's going to be these six first, so it makes sense. Drawbacks include tougher to care for your teeth and they are not as permanent as the doctors have you believe. If they are done perfectly, you might not have any problems for a while but it will eventually need to be replaced. If not done perfectly, I've seen teeth shift with them in and the people have no idea because they are under the false assumption they won't.Removable, invisible. These things are lousy and I recommend my friends and family to stay away from them. They last 6–12 months tops so need regular replacement. I just got a case in where the dental assistant wore hers “religiously” every night for five years. She’ll be back in braces. I also just don't like the fact that they don't allow for the natural occlusion and have been shown to shift the bite.Removable, Hawley. I've seen them last 17+ year when properly cared for. These are the ones made with wires and hard plastic. There is a reason that they have even the industry standard for over 50 years, but I see a lot of doctors getting away from them to save on cost. A minus with these are they depend on the quality of the lab, the quality of the impression and the expertise of the orthodontist to make adjustments—all of which I've seen in short supply.Check out my brochure on post Orthodontic treatment, retention and relapse, at Home - Bryn Mawr Orthodontic Laboratories, Inc.
