Is it okay to eat under 1,200 calories a day?

I mean, don't get me wrong. I love my food! But I'm trying to get a bit in shape for a school activity, so I'm incorporating a diet with exercise to increase my fitness. However, since I have to count calories, it's hard for me to always meet 1,200 calories on the nose. I usually end up under that amount by some amount. But I'm confused, because I've heard that your metabolism will slow down because of that, even though I can be pretty full and satisfied with this diet. I'm a teenage girl.

In short, is it okay for me, a teenage girl, to eat somewhat under 1,200 calories a day without messing up my metabolism?

It's very bad to eat less than 1,200 calories a day because that's the very least amount of calories needed in order for your body to function properly!! If you're active, you should have around 1500.

Even if you eat that much and exercise, you'll still lose the weight, feel great, and won't harm your body.

I would not recommend an 800 calorie a day diet. Especially for a 13 year old girl. You are still growing and need the extra caloric intake for your body to stay healthy at this age. 1200-1500 calories a day with regular exercise and daily activity will keep you healthy and also help to maintain your weight.

I need to mention that if you have never had your period yet,that this will be a factor also. Girls slim down and go through hormonal and body changes after they begin to menstruate. You body is going through hormonal changes anyway at 13 years of age,which requires that you need to have a higher caloric intake not a lower one.

Exercise is always better than dieting at your age as it promotes strong muscles and reduces fat. It will also help to tone your body,rather than lose weight and then still have the same figure and the fat to deal with.

It is also a known fact that your body will go into a fight or flight mode by decreasing your calorie intake. What I mean by this is that you will actually gain MORE weight by trying to lose weight in this manner. Your body will go into a mode that it thinks you are trying to starve the system and will start to store FAT.

Put the scale away,eat healthy foods,get plenty of rest,and drink a lot of fluids to ensure a healthy body. And please remember to exercise.

At 5'5" you are probably like a size 7 or 9 juniors and there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of with that size at your age.

No it isn't healthy. You need to eat a minimum of 1200 calories daily. In order to get in all the nutrients your muscles need, that is what you need to take in. So it might take you a touch longer to lose what little weight it seems you need to lose, but you will keep it off because you did it healthfully. If you eat less than 1200 your body will automatically go into starvation mode and save everything you take in as fat rather than burning it asap.

My usual diet consists of:
Monday: 930-980 calories
Tuesday: 1000-1030 calories
Wednesday: 1050-1100 calories
Thursday: 1080-1150 calories
Friday: 1080-1200 calories
Saturday and Sunday- around 2,000-2,500
Physical activity includes 60-75 minutes of walking Monday through Friday. Saturday is usually nothing or 30 minutes of walking. Sunday is a cleaning day and I'm constantly doing activity because I clean the house all day.
I have been doing this for years now and I've always been able lose a some weight on this plan when needed to. After the holiday season, I gained 5 lbs and now I'm following this routine again and CANNOT lose any of the weight. I've been doing this now for 6 weeks and STILL can't manage to take ANY weight off. I just don't understand it. Do you think it's because I'm not eating enough during the week and my body may be going into starvation mode? I do end up feeling very hungry during the week at times... Please let me know your thoughts.

First of all you need to check for hormonal imbalances, perhaps getting a Hormone profile at the lab, make sure it includes the Thyroid profile. For example, if your maintenance calories are 2000, you should never consume less than 1500 per day. Even 500 is extreme. Ideally you should cut your calories by 300 to 350 and you will still loose the weight. I did all kind of dieting to loose my weight and even lost consider amount of it. But in the process, I ruined my metabolism. When you cut your calories by large number, your body goes into starvation mode, that means, it will burn less calories to perform necessary functions.Now imagine this…you are on diet and you are consuming 1000 calories per day. You will loose weight for first 2–3 weeks and then your body will slow down its metabolic rate. So assume, when you started dieting, your maintenance calories were 2000. As you keep feeding less calories, your body adjusted itself to maintain in less amount of calories, that means your metabolic rate is slower now. You wont loose any weight after certain period of time. Its hard for someone to stay on low calories for longer period and thus at some point they return to normal diet. Now if you eat anything more than maintenance calories, they are stored in the form of fat. Your body already knew you were starving and for safer side, it will store access calories in your stomach to utilise it in future. You are back to square one and its worse than previous. You might turn into skinny fat. This is when you have no or less muscles and big belly.Better strategy to loose weight is to consume little lesser than your maintenance and regular exercise. Once you reach to your desired figures, you eat to maintain the current weight. Eat healthy and clean to stay fit. I have the same problems sometimes. You need to AT LEAST eat 900 calories for your body to lose weight. If you eat less than 900 your body will hold on the the fat. Try to eat at least 1000 calories to provide you body with needed calories that you will expend during the day. Just throw in a banana which is around 100 calories or try and eat higher calorie fruits. It is okay to bend on some foods.
