How do you know if your guinea pig is pregnant?
Thanks for the A2A, but I’m afraid I was never the best at guinea pig obstetrics. The first clue I usually had was the sudden appearance of a crop of new little guinea pigs in the hutch, first thing in the morning.The good news from all this is that really, they don’t expect or need any help from us; they normally just get on with it all by themselves. The only real advantage in knowing in advance is that it gives you a bit of warning to remove the male from the female’s company before the babies arrive. Not that he’ll attack them or anything like that (usually they are absolutely fine with babies) but the females become fertile again as soon as they have given birth, and back-to-back pregnancies are not good for mama guinea pigs, any more than they are for us.Good luck, anyway!
Why my pregnant guinea pig died...?
Sorry to hear of the death. Almost certainly the cause was pregnancy toxemia, also known as ketosis. If you are sure about the 75 days she was also overdue. Remember, the clock starts from fertilization, not from the day the pair is put together. Having the male in the cage with her was almost certainly unrelated to her death. However, unless he is neutered, he should not have been with her to prevent her getting re-bred soon after delivery

Gestation is from 59 to 73 days and average litter size is 1-4 but can be as many as 7 or more. 10 weeks or 70 days is an average time which most deliver by. I have had sows go as early as 62 days with premature bubs and as long as 72 days because of birth difficulties. All sows are different ! At 6 weeks there is no guessing if they are , its very obvious to the eye. There would be slight movements and a firmness all round. If there is only the one bub they are normally carried high up under the rib cage and are hard to feel for. She may not even look pregnant right up until she has it.
What pet stores are most likely to sell you a pregnant guinea pig?
Most pet shops The big ones like Pets at Home do wouldn't sell any pregnant animal i do love that shop :) they actually care for the animals while they stay there and they always make sure they are happy and healthy :) Or you could rehome a couple of mini pigs most of which fix their animals now :)
I Think I bought a Pregnant Guinea Pig...?
I got a Guinea Pig a month ago and now her belly has grown a LOT. not her whole body, just her belly. She also has been drinking a lot of water and eating a lot of food.. though I have never had a pig before so I'm not sure if they usually just eat a lot. Also .. when I press VERY gently around her belly it feels a like there are baby piggies in her... I'm not an expert but I have dealt with pregnant cats and dogs before so I know what a fetus feels like... Is it possible that I bought a pregnant pig from Petco? and if she IS what will happen if I go back to the store and yell at them?

You MUST remove the male from the cage before she gives birth. She can get pregnant right away after giving birth, and it will be very hard on her body to have back-to-back pregnancies. Her body needs time to recouperate. Please check out the link below. GuineaLynx is probably the best website out there on guinea pig care. Make sure she moves around the cage. If she doesn't, toxins can build up in her body and kill her. If you smell a nail polish remover smell, you need to get her to a vet ASAP. This is a sign of toxemia and is deadly. It is a good idea to have a vet ready anyway, just in case she gets complications. According to the American Cavy Breeders Association, 1 in 5 pregnant guinea pigs will die due to pregnancy and complications. It is very risky to breed. If you do not know the genetic background of your guinea pigs, you could be breeding deformities and other health complications. It is better not to breed. Please make sure you have a good vet available. Make sure she has alfalfa hay. Alfalfa is high in calcium and is good for young (under 1 year) and pregnant pigs. Make sure she is also getting enough vitamin C in her diet. Guinea pigs need vitamin C provided to them to stay healthy.
Bought a pregnant guinea pig without knowing she's pregnant...help!?
My sows' cage mate died so I mistakenly bought a new female guinea pig for her from PJ's Pet Store. I know I should have adopted but I didn't think anything wrong of it. Lately she has been getting fatter and yesterday I felt babies kick in her tummy. Been picking her up more and she is definitely pregnant - babies keep kicking and her nipples are swollen. I called the pet store I bought her from and they said to keep the babies with her until they are 5-6 weeks old and then they will take the babies. I'm not even sure I want to give the babies up to them since they sold me a pregnant guinea pig in the first place. They also told me to buy a new cage to put the pregnant sow in. I've never had a pregnant guinea pig before and I'm absolutely clueless! How long should I keep the babies with her mother for? What should I do with the pet store that sold me the pregnant pig, if I can do anything? ANY advice is appreciate. Thank you!
Male and female guinea pig mating?
I have a (male) boar guinea pig and 2 female (sow) guinea pigs and yes all three are in the same cage and they love each others company... So i had put the 3 piggies on the floor in the guinea play pen and my male started romancing one of my females and she made a couple squeaks for about an hour. Yes he was humping her. Then a couple days ago he did it again with my other female and that lasted about an hour and yes he was humping her too.. Now does this mean that the females are pregnant? From the time he did both of them he pretty much chills and lays low.. Please help? I read upon guinea pigs and understand about mating them but i need answers from someone that has experience with guinea pigs.. Thank You
