Is It Right To Say Americans Colonized Native American Territories

What did Native Americans call America before it was called America?

We know that modern America is named after Italian navigator, cartographer and explorer Amerigo Vespucci, who headed for the land called the New World in 1497. He was the first known Columbus era explorer to set foot in mainland USA. His name is in Latin Americus and thus this gave the name to the country and two continents of North and South America…well, that’s what has been taught…If it was named after Columbus instead, maybe this land would be called Christofferia or something. The literal meaning of Americus was by the way “Industrial leader”, which used to fit well for America. One Viking legend claims the continent was named Amteric after Erik the Red, where Amt means district in old Norse; Erik’s District. 11th century sailors called it Ommerike which means Farthest outland in Norse. Gothic term was Amalrik, or Kingdom of Heaven which is said the Pilgrims liked and preferred. Irish like to claim it comes from their Iargalon or a land beyond the sea. Gaulish name was Armorica meaning place by the sea. Welsh people meanwhile claim America is named after Richard Ameryk, another sailor. In Nicaragua there is a mountainous area named Amerrique, which means Land of the wind or the spirit. Mayans used to call their homeland Iq Ameq’el and Algonquin natives Em-erika, both resembling the name this has today. Old Gothic Lord of the work ethic was called Amalrich, also claimed to be an origin for America.African Moors talked about Amexem translated as coastal people, which also could refer to Mexico. Spanish people like to play down Vespucci’s role stating that Italian explorer’s real name was Alberigo Vespucci of Florence, and that he changed his name after hearing how America was called. Most amazing coincidence might be the Sioux natives in the Dakotas region. Their Chief Red Cloud namely called the area Center of everything that is. Much later Rugby, ND was proven to be the geographical center of North America.LaterAmerica has been calledThe Land of the Free, The Land of Opportunity, Home of the Brave, Land of Milk And Honey, Uncle Sam, The Melting Pot, The Western World and already mentioned The New World. In Europe America is also called Land Across the Pond. Chinese call it Mei Guo or Beautiful Country, perhaps because ‘Merica sounds a little like that in Chinese.

Were there any Native American tribes that were completely eradicated in the genocide conquering of America?

while some decimation of certain native nations were not deliberate, there most certainly was a deliberate attempt to commit genocide on all native people in north america. some would argue there still is. One of many examples:

"In his January 1851 message to the California legislature, California Governor Peter H. Burnett promised "a war of extermination will continue to be waged between the two races until the Indian race becomes extinct." Newspapers cheered on the campaign. In 1853 the Yreka Herald called on the government to provide aid to "enable the citizens of the north to carry on a war of extermination until the last redskin of these tribes has been killed. Extermination is no longer a question of time--the time has arrived, the work has commenced and let the first man who says treaty or peace be regarded as a traitor." Other newspapers voiced similar sentiments.

Towns offered bounty hunters cash for every Indian head or scalp they obtained. Rewards ranged from $5 for every severed head in Shasta City in 1855 to 25 cents for a scalp in Honey Lake in 1863. One resident of Shasta City wrote about how he remembers seeing men bringing mules to town, each laden with eight to twelve Indian heads. Other regions passed laws that called for collective punishment for the whole village for crimes committed by Indians, up to the destruction of the entire village and all of its inhabitants. These policies led to the destruction of as many as 150 Native communities."

to add to Nish Kwe's list:

Juaneño. A Shoshonean division on the California coast, named from San Juan Capistrano mission, at which they were principally gathered, extending north to Alisos Carek and south to a point between San Onofre and Las flores Creeks. Their language forms one group with those of the Luiseños, Kawia and Aguas Calientes. According to Ames (Pep. Missions Indias., 5, 1837) there were only 40 individuals in the neighborhood in 1873
Koyeti. A Yokuts tribe formerly living in south central California, in the vicinity of Tule river and southward. Mentioned in 1852 as friendly tribe on Paint (White) creek, and described as possessing unusual courage and intelligence. They are entirely extinct.

Is tobacco the revenge of the native americans for taking their land and destroying their civilization?

No. I'll tell you why. Native people used tobacco in a sacred way. It was used only in ceremony and not for recreation.

The majority culture chooses to use tobacco in recreation. It is not the fault of the Natives that they choose to do this and neither was this example set by Native people.

I am a Native woman.

EDIT: And to correct the first user. Natives didn't smoke marijuana. We didn't even have marijuana. Marijuana orginated in China.

EDIT: How much cultural ignorance can their be?
- Casinos - Most tribes don't make enough money from casinos to support anything let alone their casino. Casinos are the attempt of Native people to live a self-sustainable life. They money from casinos goes to tribal housing programs, tribal health care programs, and sometimes to their members so they can buy food and clothing. Anything else you have heard is a lie and culturally inaccurate.
- Global Warming - Natives know how to live with nature. It is this capitalist society who cares more about making money than saving the earth that caused global warming.
- Civilization - What about Natives insn't civilized. Depections of Natives as savages etc.. are media and government perpetuated stereotypes to oppress Native people. Before colonization Native people lived without most of the problems that currently exist in this society.

Before People Speak They Really Should Get Educated!!!
