Is It Sad For This Twisted Demented Couple To Get Off On Downing Other People

Why do old people get bitter, sad, and aggressive as their memory deteriorates? Are there no cases of nice and joyful senile people?

There certainly are people suffering from dementia who display no bitterness or aggression & remain pleasant to deal with & capable of showing a joyful demeanour. My paternal grandmother was such a person. Her dementia was profound enough that she was usually unaware that her husband had predeceased her several years ago (in spite of being aware of it at the time & for at least two years thereafter) & her short term memory was almost non-existent.Fortunately, she had no awareness of her dementia & therefore it didn't bother her, and her personality never changed for the worse. Her dementia possibly even provided her with comfort. It was not uncommon to visit her (in the nursing home where she remained at all times other than Christmas dinner and other special occasions) & when asked how her day was going, she might reply "Oh, you're lucky to have caught me, I just got back from the city, I had lunch with Robert (her husband, now deceased), did some window shopping & caught the bus home."She had been in her bed at the nursing home the whole time, but these false memories that seemed to fill in the blanks of her lost memories gave her nothing but comfort and pleasure. As dementia worsened over the years, she was never disturbed by (nor aware of) it & she never once became aggressive, miserable or bitter.Even during her final days, when she was unable to open her eyes or talk, she either had a neutral expression or was smiling, often when showing some recognition or awareness of those around and interacting with her.I know this is often not the case with dementia & have witnessed a very different course of the illness in others, but what I describe above does happen & I am very grateful for it.
