I think part of the trick is finding styles and methods that will work for your hair specifically.My hair is thick, somewhat coarse, and extremely resilient. Many styles therefore will just fall out from my hair too. I don't like using hair products like spray and mousse.My first tip is, don't buy hair elastics and bobby pins from the supermarket, go to places that specialise in hairdresser stuff and ask them for their best. I use 999 bobby pins, and glider hair elastics. They are both strong and effective and hold my hair tight.On eBay under “hair ties gliders”.These aren't cheap but they will last you for ages and there's heaps in a packet.If your hair tends to fall out of updos, those loose whispy styles aren't going to cut it for you. You need something tighter and bolder. I'm a fan of period hairstyles as they tended to work better for thick long hair. What you can get away with will also depend on your face shape and whether or not your hair thins out toward the ends or has a blunter, thicker edge. The great news is, if you can learn two or three unusual styles, you won't need more than that. People will be pretty impressed and start to see it as part of your style.
