Is It Worth Touching Up Scratches Before Selling A Car

How much do car scratches affect selling price of used cars?

Those scratches would probably only affect the value of the vehicle a couple of hundred dollars or so. How exactly it would affect the value depends on the depth of them. If they are completely through the color layer, a good detail guy could still likely heat up the paint with a buffing wheel and cover them up. Worst case scenario is that someone will have to touch them up with touch-up paint. It looks like it is more likely that the scratches are in the clearcoat, so a detailer could use an abrasive compound and buff it down to hide the scratches. If you were to turn this in to insurance, not only would you have a claim on your insurance history, but the cost of the repair would probably be under the amount of your deductible. A body shop would probably try to paint the panel rather than do touch-up/buffing, and paintwork de-values the vehicle more than the scratches. We in the automotive industry use paint meters to see if a vehicle has been painted, so there is no paint work that is so good that we would not know it when it comes time to trade or sell the vehicle.I recommend finding a very good detail shop and seeing if someone can buff them out or touch them up.

How much is a "new" car worth with a scratch that is semi-deep and couldn't be fixed with touch up paint?

A scratch is superficial. It has absolutely no bearing on the performance, reliability and value of the vehicle and it is easy and inexpensive to repair.HOWEVER, there is a common thought process amongst car enthusiasts that if the owner of the car cant be bothered to fix something as visible as a scratch (which surely everyone will notice) what else are they ignoring?

Is it worth fixing a scratch on your car?

My father always said if you buy a car, you buy a white one, because that is the easiest colour to touch up. That made sense 30 years ago, and it is probably relevant to an extent today, if a little boring.I had a blue metallic car with clear coat. Somebody put some decent scratches on the bonnet or hood for all you Americans. Well, I thought I would rub it back a bit and touch it up. Not a good idea! You end up having to spray the whole panel, and then it might look slightly different in colour to the original paint.Small scratches you can live with, otherwise, you will drive yourself nuts trying to find a safe place to park, especially at a shopping centre. I don’t know what it is about some people. You can park in the remotest corner of a near empty shopping centre carpark, and I would nearly guarantee there is a car parked beside your when you come out. Perhaps it is because some people need more than a line on the ground and cannot visualise parking at an angle to the road. There used to be some stuff called Armaguard or Armaglaze. It was a professionally applied product, some sort of liquid glass coating. It was pretty good at stopping scratches and resisted keying. I don’t know whether it is still around today. My latest car had paint protection applied as an extra. I was not real happy and thought I might have got conned. It was some sort of fancy polish that cost me $700 and did not seem that different to a good quality over the counter polish.Nufinish make a car polish that helps a little bit, but it won’t stop a stone chip from happening. Have a few drinks. If you own a Ferrari or high end sports car, then you might want to worry about minor scratches.

How much does chipping paint and scratches depreciate a cars value?

It's a windveil blue, 2005 gt mustang. It has a minor chipping, which I filled in with touch up paint and it came out good. Then the back bumper scratched by someone. There are three key marks and about 8 deep mark all by the license plate, but completely visible. I also used touch up paint over that but did not come out so well, its pretty noticable when looked at up close. Lastly, with the previous owner, someone had tried to break into the car on the drivers side door. The handled doesn't go back into place after being pulled (it sticks out unless you push it into place) and at the top left side, above the drivers side window, there are two deep scratches left by whoever was trying the break in. I painted that too with touch up paint but it is completely noticable.

Will any of this affect the value of my car? Should I have just left the scratches instead of trying to cover them? The car is a good condition, everything is up to date, kbb 'suggested' 18k (sold by ones self) but I assume the paint will decline that price.

By the way, all the damage done by others, were reported with police reports. I can't tell my insurance company or I won't be able to afford my insurance...

Is touch-up paint the most cost-effective way to fix minor scratches?

I have an even easier solution that Will cover the scratches and make them virtually unnoticable…Find the matching color, rub perpendicular to the direction of the scratches, then buff, and apply paste wax. 20 minutes and 4 dollars…Touch up paint will always look like touch up paint, even when done by a professional…

Should I buy a used car with dings, dents, and scratches?

Many years ago I worked for possibly the worst human being in mankind. His meaness to fellow humans was only exceeded by his love of torturing and killing small animals. One thing he did though, made sense to me only later in my life. He bought a brand new Ford Van for his business. I went to the dealership to pick it up. Brand new, shiny and smelled great. I proudly parked it in front of the business.“Theo” was standing behind the counter. “Hey, you like that don't you?” he asked. “Get your ball peen hammer and slam a nice dent into the right front fender.” Bewildered, I did as I was instructed. It was sickening. Theo really enjoyed my discomfort.Several months later he bought a new Buick Lesabre for his personal use. Again he sent me to pick it up. When I walked in, he told me to get my hammer. This time he instructed me to put a nice dent to the right front fender, but to the inner fender not visible to anyone unless they looked under the vehicle. Being perplexed, I asked him “why?”. He smiled and said; for some reason I've found that once the first dent happens, they don't happen again. So, your vehicle will likely be dented anyway. Just buy a “pre-dented” vehicle. The first owner has already taken the financial hit. Take advantage of it!

How to cover up scratches on a car without paint?

Well depending on how deep they are.If you can actually feel the scratch there's no easy fix.If it's just surface scratches you can use polishing,or if bad, rubbing compound to remove them.If you use rubbing compound, follow up with polishing compound to remove marks from the rubbing compound. Then wash the area and put a good hard wax over the repaired area.It should be completely gone by this point!

If they are deep. You can buy a touch up kit with your exact color and you can fill the scratches and then do the rubbing and polishing to make it blend in.Make sure you allow a day or two to dry before smoothing it out! Thank you and good luck.

Why do people care about scratches so much?

so i backed out this morning out of my garage and scratched my mom's car and my dad was so upset. But i dont understand, i looked at the car and it has literally 3 or 4 little white scratches. Can't you just use a scratch repair? or some black paint?(black car)
