Jacksonville Florida a good place to live?

Jacksonville is really a great city and I really enjoyed living there when I did, it has a metro population of a little over a million people so it's considerably smaller than Miami which has a metro population of almost 6 million people. Jacksonville has a violent crime rate of about 6 per 1,000 people compared to Miami's 12 per 1,000 people, so Miami's violent crime rate is double that of Jacksonville's, contrary to popular belief Miami has more violent crime not Jacksonville.

Now Jacksonville can still be a very dangerous place and still has quite a lot of murders but it's not all over the city, it's in certain parts of the city that these violent crimes usually happen so if you live in a middle to high class area you won't have to worry as much, just like with any other city.

Jacksonville is very spread out, it's split into a North, West, South and East side, the North and Northwest side of Jacksonville is where most of the violent murders occur, the West side is made up of mostly middle to low class and can be a high crime area, the South side used to be the nicest part but has recently gone down a little but it still has it's nice neighborhoods, and then the East and Northeast side are the nicest areas where the upper class live, it's also where the beaches are located.

Jacksonville definitely has a cooler climate than Miami, Miami averages high 50's to high 60's during the winter and Jacksonville averages high 40's to the low 50's during the winter months and there are occasions where at it's coldest it I've seen it get down to 25 degrees in Jax, I seriously doubt that would ever happen in Miami.

Like I said before Jacksonville is more spread out but there are still a lot of activities to do and it's a really great city, I would live there before I'd ever live in Miami

What is it like to live in Jacksonville, FL?

My husband and I moved to Florida from the Ann Arbor area in Michigan in 2003.  First we lived in St. Augustine, and it was wonderful, but Don got a job in Jacksonville, so we moved there to avoid a 45-minute commute. It wasn't my first choice, but Jacksonville has really grown on me, and here are my reasons:1.  Fantastic trees.  Trees in Northeast Florida are treasured in this area.  Nature is all around us.  This is a very fertile area, and people have to really go out of their way to make their yards "bald" (as I term it).  Things love to grow in NE Florida,2.  A wide variety of residential areas.  Jacksonville is very old.  It is nearly as old as St. Augustine.  There are large established neighborhoods from the early 19th century.  Very high end dwellings on both the Atlantic Beach, and along the St. Johns River.  Several old neighborhoods, expensive and moderately priced and bargains:  try Riverside, Avondale, Arlington, Murray Hill, San Marco.  If you don't want to buy a house, just go for lunch at the picturesque, quaint, modern, or culture-infused restaurants in the various neighborhoods.  There are a lot of inland waterways, and a lot of development that has taken place in different time periods.  The variety inspires me to want to take the long long way on cross-town errands!3.  A really nice used bookstore Chamblins, nice museums at the downtown area, nice estate sales, furniture resale, parks, shopping centers, beaches for swimming and surfing, "fish camp" restaurants (some really sweet ones).4.  Southern culture is alive and well.  The best of it is here:  the courtly personalities, the love of tradition and gracious living.  I'm glad to be in a place to experience Southern culture and folkways after living most of my life up North.5.  So much variety I'm still finding new things to get excited about as I discover them!  Jacksonville has a lot of personality!  Or I should say "a lot of personalities."I'm sure that a lot of lifelong Jacksonvillians will need to correct some of my statements!  But, thanks, Jacksonville, for being such an interesting city!

Is Jacksonville florida a good place to live?

Depends what you're looking for, but I think it's a pretty good place to live. I moved from NYC to Jacksonville about a year ago myself. The cost of living is relatively inexpensive and there are a wealth of jobs available, especially related to the financial services industry.

Everybody who has answered this question is right (well almost everybody) to some degree. Jacksonville is an enormous city in terms of area. I believe its the largest city in the country in terms of square miles. So there are many many different areas of Jacksonville ... some are a little less luxurious than others, some areas are more centered around military families, the areas near the universities are, well, filled with younger/single people, etc. I personally live out by the beach. Jacksonville for the most part has 3 large beach communities (Atlantic, Neptune, and Jacksonville Beach). In my opinion, these communities are the best to live in. In addition to the beach, there are a ton of golf courses, restaurants, shops, and night life. And the weather is beautiful. The only bad thing about living out here is the commute to work, especially if you work downtown. It takes me 45 minutes each way. As far as I am concerned it's worth it.

Is Jacksonville a good place to live with teenagers?

Living in Jacksonville is hard for those teenage years. If you have to move to Jacksonville do your research of crime in the area you plan on living. Look to the schools grade. The area of Jacksonville really matters and you don't want that teenager around people that will lead them down the wrong road. Peer pressure is real. Teeanagers are prone to do what everyone is doing. If you have a choice to move to another city just look at the differences. I raised my now adult daughter here and she came out of it just fine. Personally living here is fine but the school system leaves much to be desired. If you can take your teenager to Keystone for school or another place it will be better for them.

Is Jacksonville, Florida a good place for blacks?

Jacksonville is good for everybody. We have had some severe racism issues in the past. The entire Sherriff’s office used to require Klan membership if I recall the rumors of the 70’s correctly. Our sherrif from 1996–2004 was a black man who did some great things for our city. We actually just had a black mayor from 2011–2015 who wasn’t very good (he helped his buddies more than he helped the city) but hey, a white majority voter base gave him a shot. But because of our checkered past, we have better race relations now. As a white guy I can walk through the worst neighborhoods and still get a nod from my black brothers as I get off of my bus. There seems to be an unspoken rule of courtesy along the lines of “hey things were bad then but let’s be cool now. It’s the only way we can move on….is to move forward together.”But interracial relationships are accepted. You’ll see big bubba pick up trucks blasting rap. Black people are a great part of our economy and you’re as likely to see a wealthy black woman driving a new Jaguar while she passes a poor white guy in a 30 year old beat up Chevy. There of course is going to be prejudice anywhere you go. Jacksonville has some old blacks and old whites who will never let the past go and that will always be what it is.

Which is a better place to live, Tampa, Fl or Jacksonville?

My family and I are going to be moving in a few months and can't decide between the two cities, so which is a better place to live as far as weather, raising a family healthy food, things to do, cost of living, and crime.

Is Jacksonville, Florida a good place to vacation?

Not really. I mean you could get a hotel on the beach and just have a nice beach you vacation. Hit up some of the restaurants and maybe go explore in town a few times. We have a museum, a zoo, and some other things in town you might find interesting. But nothing crazy special. And our beaches aren’t that great. But if you have family or friends here to visit it’s a fun way to extend your trip and get a good vacation out of visiting.
