Why do people think having blonde hair and blue eyes automatically makes a person attractive?

Don't think too much of it. I don't!
I think you could describe half of Hollywood as "Blonde hair, blue eyes"

I know Blonde/Blue types that look like they've been beat with the ugly stick - twice! But it's usually assumed that people on those types of shows are somewhat attractive, or else they wouldn't be on the show. They screen! Anyways - usually if somebody is talking about somebody from one of those shows - and they're blonde/blue - they probably are attractive to a certain degree. If they were black/brown - you could probably safely assume they are attractive also.

Are there mythical areas in America where the people living there today are still affected by the culture of the legend?

Yes: Everywhere. The creation of myths is an ongoing process. There are ancient myths, and there are modern myths. There is not always a clear line between history and mythology, and much of what we understand to be history is often mixed with mythology. The lives of famous people as we know them often largely consist of myths. Hollywood is a myth factory; so is Washington DC. Elvis Presley is a modern Dionysus, and the Graceland mansion in Memphis is his temple where where the faithful go to worship. Likewise, Marilyn Monroe is a modern Aphrodite, and the L.A. house where she died is her temple. Towns and cities across America all have their places that are said to be haunted -- just look at any web directory of "haunted places," and you'll almost certainly find some in your town. Myths are all around us, and the making of myths is an ages-old human activity. Myths color our world and animate the landscape around us. A world without myths would be a dull world indeed.
