Miley Cyrus or Pink Floyd?

Miley Cyrus is better for me...-

Who told you about Pink Floyd?

This is a question that I’d love to answer. It happened back then when I was in 5th Grade, my introduction to Metal music and some old music. My dad bought me a small acoustic guitar on New Year’s and I was very excited to play it. So then I joined a music class and my teacher, well I thought he’d be like teaching chords and songs directly, but no. He started with chromatics and everything. Then I realized that it’s not just about songs when learning guitar. He was a metal head, he still is. After I got through the basics, he told me to get an MP3 and listen to more and more songs and learn them. Because if you are taught every basic, then you should be able to learn songs yourself, nobody is gonna teach you. I kinda found it weird because c’mon, I was just a kid but that is exactly what should be done while learning. So I got a Philips MP3 and he put like 600 songs in it. I opened the playlist and I was so badly confused, because there wasn’t one artist I knew about it in it. I used to listen to Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and all that time. I had no clue about Metal music. The first song I heard was Welcome to the Jungle by Guns n Roses. Honestly, I didn’t like it at all. I swear I was scared to listen to more of that. I couldn’t tell me teacher that, so I’d just make up an excuse every time. But he finally forced me to and I heard Iron Maiden and Pink Floyd. I kinda liked it. Both of them. Then slowly I heard more and more and focused more this time and not just randomly listen to it for the sake of listening to it. And after a little while, I was in absolute love with such music. And now I live as a Metal head, lol. So basically my guitar teacher has introduced me to everything about music. I’d give more credit to my dad for taking me to the right teacher. So yeah, this is the story of me getting into the music world. The ultimate music world. Can’t be more happy.P.S.- sorry if I took long to get to the point! xD

I'm 16 and my favourite band is Pink Floyd. Is this normal, and will I ever like modern music?

Good choice , though my suggestion is have bands that you consider your roots and grow from there, don't be constrained to listening to solely the Mighty Floyd as you will be missing out on so much. Taking Pink Floyd, excellent example with roots in British progressive rock, try Emerson , Lake & Palmer who were another supergroup of the same genre at the tine, work back to King Crimson, forward to Asia, sideways to Genesis and Yes , all brilliant examples. jump over to the Beatles, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, all the same genre and era. Then listen to bands inspired by these roots, like Marilion ( Genesis, Yes) , Rush (Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple) , even Oasis (The Beatles) , Spocks Beard (Pink Floyd, ELP) then on again like bands inspired by Rush (Foo Fighters, Machinehead) , by Marilion (Pendragon) for example.By now you are developing a massive content library of musical tastes with a common DNA going back from the roots of this genre up to the modern age. It's like travel, some people are happy to stay in their own back yard, others want to travel and experience what the world has to offer.

LGBT: Why exactly do people like the band Pink Floyd?

@ Adam W.: What is it with people naming Miley Cyrus & Justin Bieber, comparing Pink Floyd, ACDC or Led Zepplin to the newest Disney Popstar and Youtubes own famous kid is like comparing honey to oil. Doesn't make sense, does it? Not at all... I don't know why people feel the need to bring Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber into everything, you want them to go away. Stop Promoting their names, every time you say their name it earns them another view, another pay check and another fan.

Is it weird that I love Eminem and Pink Floyd at the same time?

No, I think it's fine. I love Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, SlipKnoT, Mudvayne, Avenged Sevenfold, Marilyn Manson, Cradle of Filth, etc, and I like both Eminem and Pink Floyd. I hate music elitists who only listen to one genre and think that's the only type of music worth listening to. We already have Politics, Religion, etc. to divide people, so I think music should be something that brings us all together.

Since you love Eminem and Pink Floyd, if you haven't heard it yet, you may like D-12's "Revelation" (in case you haven't heard of them, D-12 were Eminem's Rap group that he was a part of before he got famous and then went back for after he got big. They did 2 CDs together before one of the members, Big Proof, was shot and killed in '06. RIP Big Poof). They loosely built the song around Pink Foyd's "The Wall"...

(awesome song, but creepy as hell)
Anyway, if Eminem apparently has some Pink Floyd influence, then, no, i don't find it to be weird at all for you to like both.

Why did Roy Harper wind up singing "Have a Cigar"?  If Gilmour and Waters couldn't do it, why not Rick Wright?

I remember Waters mentioned that the key of the song caused him (possibly because of exhaustion) to not quite reach the notes that were required for the melody. I'm not sure if Wright was ever even considered to sing the song but I'm guessing he wouldn't have as Wright often expressed he didn't like some of Water's more aggressive lyrics. He also really wasn't one of the stronger vocalists in the group. I doubt he would have been able to sing the higher notes and with the sardonic bite that was necessary.Roy Harper was asked as he was recording in another studio in the same building and he was a mate. As Waters was frustrated they just asked him to have a go.In a fairly recent interview Waters mentioned he still doesn't quite like the performance (Harper's) and feels he would have done better if he'd been able to do it then. There are several interviews on YouTube on the matter.
