Is My Earring Infected

Help?! Is my earring hole infected?!?

When i was younger I had such trouble keeping my ears pierced. So, a year and five months ago i got my ears pierced (in the standard place on the lobe) AT THE MALL! (my mistake?). My Left one seems like its constantly infected. it pusses a little when i push on it. and im thinking that causes the earring to smell. I showed my doctor and she said its fine and doesnt look infected to her.

In the year and five months ive had them pierced.... I never slept with them out or took them out for a long period of time. Should I? Would that be good for them? I'm afraid they will close up and if they ARE infected, i wouldnt want the infection to be closed in my ear. Ya know?

Does anyone have any cleaning tips or advice?! Should i keep in my posts or take them out for a bit?! How often should they be cleaned? WHAT SHOULD THE PIERCING BE CLEANED WITH?! Please help!

Thanks in advanced!

Is my earring hole infected?

I'm not quite sure whether it's infected or not, but here's what happened:
I've had my ears pierced for almost 11 weeks now. I feel very little pain in my ear and a tiny bit of swelling, but when I took the earring out it was crusty around the hole and kind of goopy also. There was a lot of brown goop on the back [these are stud earrings, the same ones they used to pierce my ears with]. It was hard to get back in and bled a little [but that usually happens for me]. Right now it hurts, but only really when I'm thinking about it and sort of on and off then too.
Is it infected? If so, what should I do about it?

Taking out infected earrings?

First of all, put a good quality earring in. Make sure it's not some junk. Use sterling silver or stainless steel.

Second, when your ear is infected, you are NOT supposed to take the piercing out. I am a professional piercer.

No offense to doctors or anything, but they are generally straight-laced people who have had no exposure to the alternative lifestyle or piercings, and they don't have training in that area. I have talked to doctors before. After I explained to this doctor in the emergency room about infected piercings, he agreed that it was the best thing to do.

You need to heal your piercing before you take it out. Piercings heal from the outside in, so if you take it out, it will start to heal with the infection still in there on the inside.

Wash your piercings with antibacterial liquid soap in the shower.
Spray them with bactine 2-3 times a day(or some other kind of disinfecting spray)
Things that are good for cuts or burns are good for healing ear piercings. I would not use pure alcohol, though.
Make sure you are getting vitamin C so your body can heal the infection!!!!!!!!!!

And a big thing is to make sure you are using jewelry that isn't some crappy metal. and nickel free.

If you take your earrings out before the infection is gone, it will be much harder to pierce them again if you ever wanted it. There will be worse scar tissue and even worse complications can happen. You need to get rid of the infection FIRST, and THEN take them out if you want them out.

I assure you. A lot of other people answered this thread saying to take them out, and I'd like to hear their reasoning behind it. Any professional piercer would say you definitely need to let them heal first. All those people who are saying to take it out are wrong. Then what? What does taking it out do? The infection is STILL THERE when you take it out, except it is inside your skin!!

People who take their earrings out when the infection is still there experience sore lymph nodes (under the jaw and in armpits) and other symptoms and often wonder why. It's because taking the jewelry out doesn't solve the problem!! there is still a hole there and an infection!! You need to solve the problem. Heal the piercing.

My earring holes are infected...?

these were the ones I had since I was a baby...anyway, now its infected and is sore. how can i make it better? thanks.

And don't recommend alcohol-it actually irritates it!

Is my ear piercing infected?

Yes it is infected. I got my ears pierced from Claire's a long time ago, and I used their ear cleaning solution. You should use that everyday and be sure to twist your earrings so that the skin doesn't grow on it (so your ear lobe can heal properly).

Hydrogen Peroxide is used to treat cuts, and it sizzles and turns white and bubbly when there is bacteria present. It just lets you know it's killing it.

I don't know anything about a sea salt soak but just keep cleaning it w/the ear solution (i never had to use peroxide).

Your ears could be sensitive to the earrings you have on. I'm not sure if you're wearing the ones from Claire's or the ones your aunt got you, but if they're fake, then you could be sensitive to fake metal. I suggest you get yourself real earrings like gold or silver. My ears are sensitive to fake metal, even when my holes have closed/healed, so I only wear real silver/gold.

If my ear piercing is infected, should I take the piercing out and clean the area?

I am pretty sure my right ear lobe is infected. It is swollen, red, and warm to the touch, although I have not seen any signs of pus or leakage. However, the strange thing is I have had my piercings for over 5 weeks. I know most infections occur within a day or two after the ear is pierced, but 5 weeks? I still have not taken them out since I got them. I am also using rubbing alcohol to treat the swollen area. So is it ok to remove the earring and clean the area?

How can I get rid of a ear piercing infection? I’ve been wearing earrings consistently for a few weeks and lately I’ve noticed pain inserting and removing them, and my earlobe typically bleeds when I take the earrings out.

The first step would be to stop doing what’s causing you pain. If inserting and removing the earrings causes you pain and makes your piercing bleed, stop doing it.If it’s a relatively new piercing, you shouldn’t be removing the earrings at all. You should have high quality, pure metal studs or hoops that don’t require removal to be cleaned. New piercings need to be kept clean, twisted daily, and they should not be played with. Your piercing may just be taking a little longer to heal than predicted, so you should treat it as if it is still a brand new piercing.Even after piercings have passed the initial “healing” stage (around 6 weeks for earlobes), they should still be treated carefully. Removing and inserting new earrings too often can irritate the piercing, thus causing the pain and bleeding. Using poor quality jewelry can also cause irritation and pain, sometimes even infections if you leave them in for too long. When I was younger, wearing poor-quality earrings for more than an hour would make my ears turn red and itch, so it doesn’t have to take much.If your piercings are mostly healed already, I recommend giving them a breather. My cartilage piercing gives me trouble sometimes even though I’ve had it for a few years now. It occasionally swells up, is hot to the touch, and can get infected if I remove/insert jewelry too often or if my hair gets caught in it. My solution is to remove it, gently clean the piercing area with saline solution, and leave it alone for a day or two. After the piercing site has calmed down, I can then re-insert the earring without any trouble or pain. Please remember that it’s important to use good quality jewelry, especially when you have metal sensitivity or your piercings are irritated or infected. If you notice anything more than slight pain during insertion/removal, please make an appointment with your doctor to look at it. Infections can get out of hand very quickly if you don’t pay attention to the little things, and they can have some pretty serious consequences.

Is my ear infected and do i have to take my earrings out?

It could be infected, but I wouldn't suggest taking the piercing out. Use warm water and salt or gentle antibacterial liquid soap only to clean it, never use rubbing alcohol. Hopefully the earrings you have are stainless steel posts or hypoallergenic at least, otherwise the jewelry could be causing the swelling.

If there is a piercer in your area you can go and ask them for free, they are professionals and should be able to help you.

Puffy and pink is fairly normal though, it's going through a healing process, just try to be gentle with it.

Here is some advice from my favorite and most professional piercers:

Why is my ear piercing STILL getting infected?

When I got my ears pierced many years ago, every pair or earrings I put on used to irritate so much. After many months of that I read that some women are bothered by metals with nickel. I switched to nickel-free earrings and the problem was solved. Simply Whispers is the store where I buy earrings from because they are all allergen-free. Try it and good luck!
