Is Recycling A Big Thing In Texas

Where can I get free recycling bins for my classroom?

I teach in CA. My students and I want to recycle our water bottles and cans in the classroom. I've seen a cardboard looking container thats bigger than just a copy paper box. Any ideas where I can get one? Maybe one for every classroom at school?

Do you have to pay income tax on money made from recycling scrap metal?

If you're recycling soda cans that you bought, you have a rock-solid argument that you aren't making income because you are recovering the money you paid for the cans. It's the same principle that when you loan someone $100, only the interest you get is income; the original $100 you get back is recovering your cost.

If your neighbors give you cans to recycle then it's a gift, which is not taxable income, though gift taxes would come into play if someone gives you several tons.

If you pick up cans off the street or make a business arrangement to haul off someone's recyclables and make a profit after hauling, then it's taxable income. The IRS will never admit that any income is too small to not count, but for practical purposes they aren't going to go after $10 of income. The minimum amount is going to vary a lot depending on the situation. If you round off amounts to whole dollars on your return then you can count 49 or 50 cents as zero dollars, depending on your rounding rules.

If your profit, after relavent expenses, is $400 or more then you are legally required to claim it as self-employment income and pay harsh self-employment taxes, in addition to regular income taxes. Whether or not you get a 1099 from the buyer doesn't matter--that's between the buyer and the IRS. From a legal point of view, it also doesn't matter that billions of dollars of this sort of income aren't reported.

Can I put styrofoam in recycle bins?

Styrofoam is one of those materials that doesn’t break down but it can be reused if done properly. If your municipality has bins specifically for styrofoam by all means put it there but never, NEVER put it into bins for recycling of other materials. If burned it produces a highly toxic gas so you would not want it mixed with other materials that are processed with heat.It can be used for packing material, for mixing with soil to keep it aerated, and one of the most interesting uses I have seen is using it to make styrofoam/cement blocks and girders for building.Just as an aside, a home built using these styrofoam/cement forms can be put up in a day, is insulated against both heat and cold and can be carved. I would think it might be an inexpensive way to provide housing for the homeless but there could be drawbacks of which I am unaware.

Why is it good to live "green" and recycle?

How do I recycle large plastic toys?

I am logging in as my husband to answer my own question for the benefit of others. Here is what I discovered:
*First of all www.thinkgreen.com is a FANTASTIC resource for all things recycled! It explains the difference in numbers and what those plastics are and what they can be recycled to become in the future.
*All Little Tikes large plastic playthings have a recycling number stamped in to them.
*Our kiddie kitchen is a #4 plastic LPDE. This particular plastic can be recycled in to plastic shopping bags (among other things).
*However check with your local dump before you drop! Southampton Town only recycles #1 & #2 plastics. I was told for a $5-$10 fee my toy kitchen would be "destroyed" and become part of the town landfill... not cool.
*I contacted Trex to see if they would take it - I have not heard back yet.
*I called waste management, but they are closed for the weekend.
*Finally I checked the websites of neighboring towns. Many only accept the #1 and #2 plastics, but Riverhead town takes all numbers! Luckily I have friends who are residents of this town who will help me to recycle this toy.

*****In the end I will think long and hard about things I buy for my children from now on. I will also take care to make sure I donate an item once it is ready to leave the safety of the house (the toy kitchen spent a year in the backyard before this dilemma arose). Keep in mind that due to recalls, charity organizations no longer "take everything".
Also keep in mind that you can recycle/donate many things for more than you would get at a yardsale! Example: I sold a working air conditioner for $10, LIPA would have given me $20, I sold an old computer for $20, I could have written off $100 from Salvation Army.
Thanks for reading, hope all this research and time this helps someone else, too :)

What's so great about Texas?

Wow, where to start, and where to end…. Admittedly this will be exceptionally biased as I have lived here all of my life (except for a stint in the Army).Lets start with geography and scale of the area. Texas has a very diverse geology and ecosystem. Texas is huge, it’s bigger than most European countries. It has a long coast line, and touches the foothills of the Rockies. Texas has large flat area plain areas as well as hills and some questionable mountains (I have been to the Rockies and the Appalachian Mountains, Texas does not have mountains). From Infrastructure point of view, Texas has four major Metroplex areas: Austin-San Antonio, Dallas - Fort Worth, El Paso, and Houston with a large variety of business from Oil, Satellite, Computer Tech, Science, Agriculture, Livestock, and growing entertainment industry in San Antonio/Austin area (lot of the reality shows are done in the area), and I barely scratched the surface of the variety of businesses there are in all of Texas. If you are into Sports: 2 NFL Teams, 2 professional baseball teams, 3 professional basketball teams, 1 professional hockey team, and 2 major league soccer teams. I know I missed several other sports and not to mention several minor league teams (highly recommend going to a minor league game, a lot more fun in my opinion)If you like hunting and fishing Texas has you covered with the Gulf of Mexico, and several 1000 acres of untamed land. The Arts, I’m just going to put this here as too many to list: List of museums in Texas - Wikipedia and I am not touching on all of the stadiums, theaters, music halls etc….But, if you were to pinpoint on what makes Texas great it is the people here. I would say our overriding philosophy would be: self reliance, but look out for your neighbor as well. Sounds a little contradictory but it works. I do not think our philosophy is that unique however it seems to be on greater display here.
