Is Severe Depression And Anxiety Healable/curable

Is anxiety disorder curable?

Sure.  There are lots of them.   Medication is an excellent tool.  It doesn't even have to be an anti-anxiety medication.   When I was in school, cardiac nurses told me they'd take a small dose of Inderal (propranolol) before presentations to stay calm.   It's an old cardiac drug, and often used to lower heart rate.  Some psychiatrists prescribe it for anxiety as it's not addictive.  It doesn't change your emotional state (some anti-anxiety meds can make you a little TOO relaxed).    Be careful about any existing low blood pressure, etc.!  There's a whole host of anti-anxiety meds.Therapy, in many forms, can help guide you thru overcoming social anxiety in steps.    It's good, but even better with medication.Having just a few successful, less panicky interactions usually brings reward in itself.    You may even be self-congratulatory, which is fine--but keep it to yourself.   When you're comfortable in areas of lesser anxiety, push yourself to go to the next step.Exercise--my favorite is running--also calms you and gives you a strong, steady heartbeat at rest, thereby short circuiting some of the worst parts of an anxiety disorder--racing heart, sweats, palpitations.   See yourself in perspective with others.   This probably should be first.Years ago I was so paralyzed with social anxiety I could not get ANY words out of my mouth in a job interview.   None.   And I desperately needed a job.   Forty years later, after therapy, medication, and observing life, I stood in front of an audience of 500 educators, MD's, RN's, and other discussed the dangers of  blood thinning medication, made jokes, and enjoyed it.   I'm still shy, and will never be a butterfly.   But my very very deep and limiting social anxiety is gone.    My patients often told me I seem jittery--and my response is to tell them I am, I always have been.   I'm not careless, I'm just anxious on any given day.Hope you find this helpful.  And when you finish that speech in front of 500, pat yourself on the back for a job well done.  Keep trying.  Every success leads to confidence.

How to overcome depression and anxiety, without medication and seeking help?

Dear Lee,

"7 Ways to beat depression" the list below should also prevent depression from happening to you if applied, you will get out of it what you put into it, reading alone will only take you so far, make the points which apply to you and tailor make it specific to yourself.

Change your mind
"The mind is easier to change than matter so why not do the easy thing first and the rest will take care of itself" Depression starts in the mind is your glass half empty of half full, do you see the positives, lessons and benefits of your life experiences?

Change your body
"Look good, feel good, feel good, look good". Take regular exercise, and give your body enough time to rest and recharge. Sometimes depression is just a way our body uses to communicate that message.

Change your diet
"Diets kill you which is why people don't enjoy them". Monitor what you eat, find out which foods and drink give your body the nutrients it needs, and those, which do the opposite. Determine to balance your eating habits

Change your mental
Mental refers to a process of thought causing a chain reaction spirit-mental-physical. Having limiting, negative beliefs and thinking create depression and becomes a habit, These effects come out in our thoughts, words, actions and physical symptoms. Positive thinking has the opposite effect

Change your spirit & destiny
"Our so called trials provide us with the greatest opportunity for growth" We all have a purpose in life, if we don't know what it is, or we know but we aren't working towards it, depression can set in. There are many resources out there in the personal development field to help one find their unique path.

Change your friends
"Who you hang out with, will influence who you become" How do you spend your spare time, who are you with, do they help you in a positive way? What do you read? Do you read? What do you watch on TV? Having quality time that uplifts you will go a long way to preventing depression.

Try before you die
"Experience confirms, the status quo conforms" Enjoy life fully, try new techniques and processes to help you enjoy life, don't knock something before you experience it for yourself.

"Depression affects the mind and body, to beat it you need to put your mind and body into.

God Bless =)

What can I do to cure my depression (mild) without therapy and without meds?

I look at it like this:Your body warns you if something is not right and if you don’t listen to it, it activates its mechanisms and gets into these states in try to get “better” and stay alive. This is pretty normal, especially in today world where we are receiving too much unnecessary information and stress too much, but hey this is all a big plan of these system - KILL as much people as possible without even touching them, make them feel empty inside, make them question themselves, make them watch porn, make them focus on sickness…So, it can happen to anyone and it is not something you should be ashamed of. Not everybody has an easy life, but we are still alive, that’s what matters. If you manage to overcome depression and anxiety you will be 100 X stronger then those who never experienced it.My best tips to overcome it:Embrace it, look at it as something great, smile at it.EXPRESS - Go somewhere where you can be all by yourself and dance, shout, scream, sing, practise deep breathing and bioenergetic exercises which will help you feel your body, be aware.Go crazy, go all in.You can use pills, but they will only ease the symptoms, they will not fix the rout of the problem… YOU have to do it, it’s all in your head. I’ve been depressed and anxious for 4 years and I got rid of it in a bout 1 month, but sometimes I still like to get depressed, because it drives me like crazy to achieve beautiful things in life, it motivates me when I look at all them happy people that didn’t really follow their dreams.Starts cannot shine without darkness, remember that.IF I did it, you can do it TOO!BE FREE!

My therapist says that I have "Non-biological depression". Can this be treated ??

There are two main types of depression - for some folks, even if they have a wonderful life, a neurochemical imbalance, thyroid problem, or other physical problem causes depression. For other folks, their past and present experiences, their current situation, past trauma and/or their current environment causes depression. A combination of anxiety & depression is quite common. You may simply not have found the right therapist for you or you may be holding back from discussing past or present experiences that drive your depression/anxiety. I'd strongly recommend learning and actively using coping skills and strategies. Meds can give support - but they will not change you. I strongly recommend to my clients that they become mindful of the ways in which they treat themselves - are you your own best friend or your own worst enemy? Notice your own feelings and thoughts and take control of them - be kind to yourself - don't beat yourself up - journal your feelings - ask yourself if you are being active or passive in your therapy? Personally, I'd recommend an LCPC or LCSW - psychologists tend to focus on behavior - I prefer therapists who treat the whole person from a "strengths perspective." Good luck

How to overcome shyness/social anxiety for normal life?

Social anxiety can cause these feelings, which can also lead to severe depression,

There is hope; I've been there, and still am there, it is a long, hard struggle. I recommend
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/cognitive_b... worked best for me, with mild anti-anxiety meds. I suffered from social anxiety for over 15 years. I've tried individual therapy, and group therapy and studied psychology for 10 years, as a profession, but also with the hope to cure myself.

Depending on your comfort level, you could go to a psychologist that practices CBT and specializes in anxiety disorders, seek a group therapy, or create one. Usually those that do attend the group therapy are a bit more high functioning because as you know, it can be difficult to speak in a group.

Another idea is to see if there are any local research studies being conducted that you could participate in.

The program that finally worked the best for me is this one: http://www.socialanxiety.us/findinghelp.... and I was lucky enough to have a structured behavioral group to go along with it. Sometimes the people that actually attend this program come back home and form groups.

I recommend a mild anti-anxiety med in addition to CBT therapy.

Any questions, let me know ... I can't tell you how much this has improved my life!
