Is 30 too old to start a music career?
The same way someone in their 20’s or teens would with some significant adjustments. You go through all the same steps, the first being get really good at your instrument. You find your sound and who you are as an artist. You spend time playing shows, honing your chops in the studio and networking. You write great music (or get very good at covering it). You learn about the business. You get a professional website and business cards.Next you get clear on your goals. Do you want to be a session musician? A Songwriter for other artists? A solo act? Do you want to be in a band? Sell your own recordings?You get really good at your instrument, hyper organized, you show up on time for everything (15 minutes early is on time, on the dot is late).Rinse. Repeat.Now the hard part: dealing with people who tell you that you are too old to get started. They are only saying that because they feel they are too old and the last thing they want is someone like yourself having a music career to prove them wrong. So you educate them. In the year 2016, telling someone they can’t have a career in their chosen field because of a birthday is unacceptable. So you tell them that to their face and let them know they should never, ever say that to someone. It’s rude. (this will be a very real part of your experience if you are getting started right now and to anyone on Quora tempted to write the same thing, beware of the virtual side eye I am sending your way). I am lucky I did not listen to those people or I would have not gotten my first record deal at the age of 30 or been featured on MTV “Buzzworthy” when I was 35.Now a reality check: Because you are getting started later, you have to work harder. You will put in longer hours and probably experience more doors slamming in your face. That’s not a bad thing. Shut doors make you appreciate the ones that open more.Start small and local.
