How to spot a Michael Jordan reprint rookie card from the real deal?

Who told you it's illegal to sell ungraded cards as anything other than reprints? I've been selling ungraded and graded cards for 20 years, and 12 years on eBay.

It's illegal to sell fakes as the real thing, and that's why you have to be able to spot a fake. A fake is not the same thing as a reprint. Fakes are made to look exactly like the real thing but do not have the words 'copy' or 'reprint' on the backs, and they are made to rip off the unaware.

Reprints are made by the major companies and are obviously not the original because the copyright date on them is obviously not the same as the original. They also may have differences, including different numbers on the backs (as part of a special insert set), foil stampings, etc. Other reprints have been made by small companies under license from the owner of the original image, but under law, they must be identified as reprints or copies. As I said before, the cheaters don't do this. Worse, they take one of these fakes and do things to it to make it look old.

And that's where professional authentication comes in. When grading first got started, it was not so people could make money by sending in millions of brand new cards that should all be mint anyway so they can maybe get a '10'. It was to protect collectors of vintage baseball cards from being ripped off by the crooks who sold genuine cards, but they were trimmed cards, recolored cards, cards with worn corners that had been 'fixed' by adding paper, cards that had their yellowed borders bleached to look white. And, of course, the pros can easily spot the counterfeits.

There are official Jordan reprints that Fleer put out in 1996 for the 10th anniversary of the original. And there are lots of counterfeits.

I can tell a Jordan counterfeit from the real thing, but describing how to isn't so easy. All I can say is that the fakes look too perfect. Many of the real ones are somewhat off-center. And the fakes have reds and blues that are too bright. If you look at one under high magnification, you'll see that the printing, especially on the Fleer logo, is pixellated. That's because the fakes aren't printed from plates, they're printed using a copied image of the real card.
