What are some good examples of where "political correctness" has gone too far, and the problem has not been corrected over time?
I have african-american friends and we are really close. I am asian. And our friendship is very close to the extent that our jokes and conversations are free very much and the slur that we used didn’t feel hurtful at all. Yeah, the N word and C word were thrown. But the reason why I sometimes called him with that N, is because he allowed me. And what is his reason? Because he feels proud with that word instead, he likes the chill, cool, yet nasty nuanca from that word, which he said, ‘let’s face it, we negros are special, so why don’t we use a word that identify us culturally and use that as a symbol of proud. I am proud to be called as a Negro. You should do the same, because if you don’t, then you just underestimate yourself. ” (That is literally what he said). Yes, it might sounds a bit nasty, but there’s an ounce of truth in it that made me shook. Hence, I allowed him to call me Chigga or some asian slurs. We laughed at our own foolishness, and we laughed on that ridiculousness caused by those racist words. Because in fact, it doesn’t affect me at all.Back to the question. One time, we got kicked out from a progressive seminar (about racism) in Boston because a girl heard me called my friends (who have the same sarcastic sense of humor) with that N word. She scolded me very loud and embarrassed upon the public. I got triggered, so did my friends, that time because this girl (the scolder) was stranger and didn’t know about our story and our friendship. However, apparently the public, and the organizer, seemed agree with this girl. Hence, the organizer asked me to leave the seminar. So we (me and friends) walked out. In that moment I was shook of how ignorant these so-called progressive and liberal could be. Why were they acted so authoritarian and looked at me as if I’m deviant. Since then, I become a non-believer of both sides, neither liberal nor Conservative are solely good for progressive future.
