there are a few different DVD formats. DVD+R and DVD-R. Some older dvd drives support one, but not the other EDIT: from your addition details, the higher quality discs you bought were +R format. look for -R format instead

It gets complicated because it depends on the resolution and quality and type of format your movies are in. If your downloaded movie is of bad quality and resolution, putting it on DVD will look horrible. Something that looks great on your PC may not look great on your TV as you play that DVD. So I wanted to burn a movie that I ripped onto my laptop (using Handbrake) onto a blank DVD. But is it possible to burn it on to a blank CD-R instead? Will it be watchable on a DVD player? And can it be opened on a laptop and watched there? I don't really understand how this works, so if someone could explain it to me, I would really appreciate it. And what is the difference between a regular CD/DVD and a data CD/DVD? Thank you sooooo much for your help!!
