The history of bottle caps?

Cork and wood bottle stoppers are known to be the oldest bottle caps. Even today most wine bottles use cork (the good stuff anyway) to seal the bottles. By the middle of the 19th Century the use of glass bottles and jars was on the rise and so was the development of bottle closures. In 1856 a screw cap was invented with a cork disc attached to seal glass jars. From 1856 to around 1915 most beer bottles used a wire attached mechanical cap. This style of cap is still being used with some modifications.

The origins of the bottle cap we know it started in 1890 with William Painter. Painter came up with a one-time use cap with a cork lining he called crown cork since it resembled the British Queen’s crown. This type of bottle cap is still in wide use today by the beer industry.

The invention in the early 1900s of mass production of glass bottles lead to an increase in the use of crown caps. In addition, further growth came from other containers being converted to bottles in order to make use of the crown cap. Within 20 years nearly all soft drink and beer bottles were sporting crown caps.

During the 1960s the advent of less expensive synthetic materials and sparse cork resources lead to the replacement of the cork lining in crown caps with plastic. In addition, some of the crown caps have been replaced with twist-offs that don’t require a separate opener.

Today aluminum and plastic pilfer proof (PP) caps have replaced most of the crown caps on glass and plastic beverage containers. Most beer bottles still use either one-time use or twist-off crown style caps.

Why is the bottom of a typical plastic bottle not flat?

Thanks for the A2A,Other people have pointed out the main reasons from the design point of view why the bottom of the plastic bottles normally used for packaging beverages are curved instead of being perfectly flat. The main reason offering structural integrity. However, one of the other main reason is from processing point of view. Plastic bottles are prepared by a process called blow molding. In blow molding, a plastic parison (hollow tube) is extruded and placed between two halves of a mold and blown under pressure to produce the bottles. In order to seal the hollow lower end of the parison, a ‘pinch off’ is present in the mold which bends the lower hollow end and flattens it. This generally leaves a mold mark/ weld line at the bottom of the bottle.source : Blow Molding | Kyoraku Co., Ltd.This extra pinch of molded plastic is irregular and if the bottle is placed flat, the stability of the bottle might be affected at times and also spoils the aesthetic look of the product. So, having a concave shape like this below both serves the purpose of hiding the pinch off mark and also provides stability at the bottom for the bottle.Source : Stock Photos, Royalty-Free Images and Vectors | Shutterstock

What is the reaction of mixing mentos with coke?

There is no chemical reaction and it is just a physical process. The thing that makes soda drinks bubbly is the carbon dioxide that is pumped in when they bottle the drink at the factory. It doesn't get released from the liquid until you pour it into a glass and drink it and some also gets released when you open the lid (more if you shake it up beforehand). This means that there is a whole lot of carbon dioxide gas just waiting to escape the liquid in the form of bubbles.Dropping something into the Coke speeds up this process by both breaking the surface tension of the liquid and also allowing bubbles to form on the surface area of the Mentos. Mentos sweets are covered in tiny dimples (a bit like a golf ball) which dramatically increases the surface area and allows a large amount of bubbles to form.

Is it true Coca cola bottles were designed in WW2 to sink if thrown overboard from a ship?

Coca-Cola® originated as a soda fountain beverage in 1886 selling for five cents a glass. Early growth was impressive, but it was only when a strong bottling system developed that Coca-Cola became the world-famous brand it is today.

Bottlers worried that Coca-Cola's straight-sided bottle was easily confused with imitators. A group representing the Company and bottlers asked glass manufacturers to offer ideas for a distinctive bottle. A design from the Root Glass Company of Terre Haute, Indiana won enthusiastic approval. The Contour Bottle became one of the few packages ever granted trademark status by the U.S. Patent Office. Today, it's one of the most recognized icons in the world - even in the dark!

Why are there spaces in the threads of plastic soda bottle caps?

It's an artifact of the manufacturing process which allows easy ejection of the cap after molding. The key terms are "collapsible core" and "interrupted thread."The cap mold has to collapse into a smaller space after forming the cap in order to allow the cap to be ejected.  The gaps in the threading (interrupted thread) appear when the mold is expanded since that space is needed when the mold is collapsed.  If continuous threading were used, the part would have to be unscrewed from the mold instead of ejected, costing precious energy and time. This video shows it clearly.Technical reference:  Plastics Engineering Handbook Of The Society Of The Plastics Industry
