Should the US remove term limits for the President?
The whole concept of term limits is originally based on George Washington’s position that the US democracy was different from a monarchy. If the same person can get elected over and over again, the US would essentially be creating a monarchy. He chose to serve two terms and that was the unwritten rule from his tenure on.In US history, there have been less than a handful of times since FDR got elected to 4 terms that having no term limits would have made a difference. Truman was beat badly in the New Hampshire primary in 1952 and subsequently dropped out of the race. In 1968, Lyndon Johnson represented a Constitutional crisis because he was not elected to one of his terms. The colossal failure of the Vietnam War would have certainly made it difficult to secure the nomination, especially since his VP Humphrey ran on ending the Vietnam War.In my lifetime, this has only been a remote possibility recently because Bill Clinton and Barack Obama came to the office so young. Right now, in the 2020 field, Donald Trump is definitely running and will most likely get the Republican nomination. On the Democratic side, there are people that want Hillary Clinton to run again, Joe Biden’s name has been mentioned. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are also supposed to be in the mix. Warren would be the youngest in 2020 and she would still be older than 70. Serving three terms would take Warren to her 80’s.As an intellectual argument, removing term limits is interesting. As a practical matter, age and politics in general may make anything beyond two terms a moot point.
