Is there a free website for public records that is actually FREE?

When people ask about public records, many times they are looking for vital records or birth, death and marriage records, which are not considered public records by all states and counties within those states. Each state has its own rules and regulations, but for privacy reasons, death records are closed to the public for around 50 years, and birth records for 75 to 100 years.

The LDS/Mormon [FamilySearch.org] site has many free original records on their Beta site which will soon replace their Pilot site so I’m just giving the link for the Beta site: http://fsbeta.familysearch.org/s/collect...

Also, be sure to check each state that you need information from as many have their own projects, for example, the state of Missouri has a great website that has many free source documents online at http://www.sos.mo.gov/mdh/ , South Carolina has many free wills and other court documents at http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/onlinear... and West Virginia birth, death, and marriage original records can be found at: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx

Indexes do not contain as much information as actual certificates but they are helpful and their value in research should not be overlooked. The most popular index is the Social Death Security Index, which can be found at: http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ or http://www.familysearch.org/ENG/search/frameset_search.asp

There are other Death Indexes that you can search, most notably the California Death Records and Indexes at: http://vitals.rootsweb.ancestry.com/ca/death/search.cgi?cj=1&o_xid=0000584978&o_lid=0000584978 , which is the (free version) at Rootsweb.

A Genealogy Guide for Finding Obituaries, Cemetery Burials and Death Records for the state of California can be found at http://www.deathindexes.com/california/index.html ,some free and some fee.

Also, USGen Web is a free online resource that has records for every state and most counties within those states. http://www.usgenweb.org/ .

If you don’t find what you need in this manner, you could go to the library and search the newspaper archives for engagements or wedding announcements. Or you could post a query on Rootsweb to the surname board you are interested in to see if anyone has the particular record of interest http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

Is there a web site to check the serial numbers to firearms?

Serial number " registration" information is restriced to law enforcement only. Your police can run the numbers but be forewarned, IF the weapon comes up as stolen you can expect a visit from the authoritys, and your neighbor will most likely end up in trouble. If you've known your neighbor long enough and trust him enough to buy the firearm from him, is there really any reason to worry?

Do temporary restraining orders appear on employment background checks?

It depends upon what the employer uses to get that background information. For less than $30. I can know more about you than you know about yourself. Most employer are too cheap to order that level of background search but the nature of things means that many employers do no searches at all. Here is why you think some information is shielded that is actually quite available. Consider a young woman who has an arrest for prostitution and later goes back and has the court record expunged. She thinks her life is now free of that taint. However when she was seeking a lawyer she reached to a girlfriend and emailed her questions about what to do about the prostitution arrest. Bingo ! Now that information is in the wild and any researcher can grab it and spread it all about. We are now in an era in which people must live with their past mistakes or conditions. When companies promise secrecy they still tend to sell your information. Ask anyone who takes a medication long term how much they are bombarded with companies seeking to supply that prescription for less than you might be paying. Even the big chain pharmacies spread your information about and they deny it. But if you take a script for insulin to your local drug store you will soon see if you don’t start getting a lot of phone calls from companies selling diabetic supplies.
