How can you estimate a person's height from a single photo?

You can't always. It depends on the angle the photo was taken and if there are other visible objects in the photo to compare to.In case there aren't any, you can only estimate and guess.I can take a photo of a baby with a klow aperture lens looking from its feet up and it would look like a 6-foot monster.

What is the purpose of precision measuring tools?

The straight answer is, they measure accurately.
Precision measuring instruments are used when very small tolerances are involved.
One such application would be when manufacturing gauges that are used in general machining operations to measure with. Obviously the gauges themselves need some tolerance in size accuracy, and ordinary measurement devices like vernier calipers, micrometers etc. are unable to be used for such fine tolerance use.
The temperature of anything is absolutely critical to its size, say when machining a gauge for workshop use, so measurements are always made or checked at 20 deg. C.
Engineering measurements that need high accuracy are usually made by reference to a "working standard", that itself has been referenced to a "master" standard.
In engineering metal working and sizing, that working standard is often a series of stack- together metal blocks, commonly known as Johansson blocks/ gauges, or slip gauges, or Jo- blocks.
These very finely finished gauges can be stacked together to heights of effectively any height. They are so precisely flat and finished, they cling together as if magnetised (but they are not). Special "wear" blocks are used top and bottom, to protect the main blocks.
These precise stacks are used to zero- in very fine comparison devices (such as an optical comparator), that are then used to check the piece being worked upon, for its accuracy in relation to the blocks.

How tall is 5 foot 10 compared to 6 feet?

That’s not ‘ALOT’ of difference, but anyways here we go.Robert Forster (5′10) With Channing Tatum (6′0)Left to RightJason Statham (5′10) With his Buddy (6′0)Bruce Willis (6′0) with Sylvester Stallone (5′10)And that’s about a 2 inch difference…

How tall is 5 foot 9 compared to 6 feet?

It’s only 3 inches, but to give you a perspective of what this would look to a third party. This is an image of two models on a height comparison tool website. As you can see, the 5′9 person’s eye level would be around the mouth area of the 6ft tall person. In practicality, a 5′9 person won’t feel that much shorter than a 6ft tall person.

Calculating maximum height?

Michael Jordan, formerly of the Chicago Bulls basketball team, has some fanatic fans. They claim that he is able to jump and remain in the air for two full seconds from launch to landing. Evaluate this claim by calculating the maximum height that such a jump would attain. For comparison, Jordan's maximum jump height has been estimated at about one meter.
