When I hear “Bohemian Rhapsody,” I think of a typical progressive rock-type song. Tremendous vocals and musicianship, a long and heavy story, and unique sections that are different from each other. These are songs you turn your lighter on if you were at the original concert, but you wouldn’t be able to dance to. In no particular order, here’s my top 5 songs:“Aqualung” by Jethro Tull: This is a song about a homeless pedophile. Tremendous vocals and musicianship, it made Jethro Tull into superstars.2. “1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be)” by Jimmy Hendrix: The closest thing Hendrix did to classical music. It features an awesome hook, a really trippy middle section, then a reprise of the original theme.3. “Echoes” by Pink Floyd: This behemoth took up an entire side of an LP when was first released. Like Hendrix, very trippy with lots of cool effects from the instruments and the engineers in the studio.4. “Come Sail Away” by Styx: A little schlocky for this list, nevertheless tremendous vocals, lots of keyboards, and lyrics that try to be trippy. Everyone in this band could play, sing, and write very well.5. “Deja Vu” by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young: David Crosby never gets the credit he deserves as a songwriter. The three and four-part harmonies on this song are quite intricate. Not the heavy guitars and keyboards you hear in the other songs, but just as complex.There you have it, not exactly songs you tap your toes to, but something songs to contemplate.
