What is a good horror-thriller book to read?

Any book by Stephen King.He is an excellent author. His word choice is brilliant and the way he sets the scene is amazing in all of his books. “Misery” and “IT” are excellent, though they’re very long. “The Shining” is great as well.I want to read more of him. I love the stories he tells and how he tells them, and I think anyone who is looking for horror/thriller would too.

What is a good psychological thriller novel idea?

What do I need to make a good horror/thriller story?

I’d normally not answer this kind of question because I’m not a horror writer, but I see that, so far, you’ve gotten few answers so I’ll say a couple thing.Mystery and horror are, more than most genres, driven by specific guidelines. Find a book/class/mentor who can teach you the correct way to write horror— the craft of it— and follow their advice to the letter. Follow it absolutely even if you think it’s silly, because that’s what will get people reading what you write. (Maybe this is the place to mention that when I started writing, I didn’t sell until I ran across an article in a writing magazine that laid out the specific steps to writing a short story, after which I started selling immediately.) Even if you self-publish, readers subconsciously, like editors consciously, recognize whether a piece is written correctly or not.Remember that the most important aspect of horror is suspense. Learn how to generate suspense and then do it. Overdo it. Overdo the overdoing.

What is the recommended word count for a horror or thriller novel?

Generally speaking, book lengths (based on traditional publishing) aren’t genre-specific, except in one case. They’re audience-demographic specific. So:Middle Grade - 20k-60k wordsYA - 60k-80k wordsAdult - 80k to 100k (but up to 120k for Epic Fantasy)There are exceptions to that. Harry Potter books got pretty well out of control word-count wise, but she was selling hundreds of thousands of copies. Publishers will wink, nod, and look the other way if there’s a ton of money involved.Mainly, the size limits on books were enforced because it can be significantly more expensive to bring a book longer than 100k or 120k words to market. The cost of printing hits a tipping point there, where the book will have to be priced higher than the market can bear (people will be willing to pay). So a decent profit margin can’t really be maintained unless a crazy number of books being sold is guaranteed. Like with JK Rowling. All of that is traditional publishing. An interesting thing happening with indie publishing is that a lot of authors are cranking out 40k-60k word books and finding a lot of success. In some genres, readers really like this length and eat them up. In others, not so much.I think for horror, authors could get away with a shorter word count like that. I don’t know that thriller readers would embrace it though. I don’t have enough data to be sure.Hope that helps :)Bests,VG

What's the best horror/thriller book you've ever read?

have you ever read The Magic Bedknob by Mary Norton ,it scared the hell out of me...

What are the best mystery/thriller or horror book that you would suggest a 12 year old girl?

For a 12-year-old, I’d suggest several of Agatha Christie’s novels; for instance:Cat Among the PigeonsHallowe’en PartyThe Moving FingerI’d also suggest some of the classic mystery series written for teens, such as Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys. Attempt to find copies of the Applewood editions that contain the original texts instead of the revisions. Another good series for teens is The Three Investigators. There are many other vintage series available in secondhand bookstores. The Westing Game and Holes are also great mystery novels for 12-year-olds.
