Is This A Good Stocking

What is a good yarn for Christmas stockings?

You can use wool, a wool/acrylic blend, wool/cotton blend, or acrylic and knit a stocking you'll be able to use for decades. It all depends on what you want to spend on the yarn and what you like to work with.

I have knit stockings for all my children and grandchildren. The oldest ones are acrylic, because that's what was available when they were done. The newest ones are wool/acrylic blend, because that's the yarn I use most often and I prefer the appearance. They have all held up very well. If I were starting over, I'd use either the wool/acrylic blend or wool/cotton blend.

Moths may or may not be an issue, depending on where you store the stockings. In the same house, I have had moths invade one (non-climate-controlled) closet and munch through two coats, yet avoid another (climate-controlled) closet and my (non-climate-controlled) yarn stash. Perhaps you'd want to have moth-resistant pouches for storing the stockings and keep them in your buffet or other part of the house that is climate controlled. Wool is "moth-proofed" by the addition of toxic chemicals that kill the moth larvae when they commence munching on the yarn. There's just something about the idea of imbuing a Christmas stocking with poisonous chemicals that puts me off.

Helpful hint: If you are planning to fill the stockings, you might want to go tighter on the tension than your pattern calls for. While looking great hanging empty by the chimney with care, a filled stocking may stretch more than you anticipate. The wool blend ones are especially stretchy, and the next one I do is going to have a tighter gauge to atempt to counteract the stretch.

Good stocking stuffers for everyone?

This is no joke, I do this at work every year:

1) I package of AA batteries (they will definitely need this for X-MAS.)
2) Small bottle of nice smelling hand sanitizer
3) Personalized cheap pens and pencils (that is really cool for school, because they can say to someone, "hey, that's my pen"...the other person would say...oh yeah....does it have your name on it?...and they can say "YES").
4) Any type of chocolate
5) You have to really find this one -- ketchup potato chips -- they are soooooo goooood.

Oh yeah, I forgot:
6) I go to Walmart and they have T-Shirts for sale all the time...I just find out what the person's favorite color is and pickup t-shirt for $3.00 or even $2.00.
7) A box of their favorite cereal. (It is kind of cool seeing a box of Captn. Crunch sticking out of the stocking.

What are good stocking stuffers for coworkers?

It would be fairly graceless to "do" for the rest of the office, except for one person. Ask around about what other people are intending to do. We used to do things like this at work (though we didn't have stockings) -- typical things we used to find in our mailboxes were a single good chocolate, a homemade cookie, a skeletonized leaf (biologists!), (http://www.hometrainingtools.com/leaf-skeleton/a/1513/ ) One of the grad students made everyone handlens lanyards one year in their favorite colors.
