Is This A Peer Reviewed Article

What are peer reviewed articles?

A peer reviewed article is an article that has been vetted by experts in the field it contributes to before publication. After the experts review the article it may be accepted for publication, rejected, or sent back to the author(s) to revise and resubmit.

Peer review means that the editors of journals in various fields don't have to be experts in every single subfield; it also means that when someone comes along to do research in a field they aren't already expert in, they can be sure of the quality of what they're reading.

Where can I find peer reviewed articles on TB?

Pubmed (Access at: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) is a search engine for Medline that has plenty of peer reviewed articles not only on TB but for other medical issues.

How do I know if an article is peer reviewed?

Most databases (ie. proquest, ebscohost, etc.) allow you to modify article searches by peer reviewed. Generally peer-reviewed, scholarly articles are more than two pages, include a literature review and methodology and a bibliography of works cited/consulted. If the article seems like the opinion of the author, without detailed proof, it is not peer reviewed.

Ask the librarian at your local public or academic library to show you how to search for specific topics within peer-reviewed and scholarly journals. She/He will be more than happy to assist you.

Good Luck!

How can you tell if an article has been "peer reviewed"?

"Peer reviewed" means that before the article appeared in the journal, it was examined by other experts in the field to see if it met appropriate standards of quality for publication.

You can check the website for the journal (or a paper copy of the journal) and it will usually tell you whether it is a peer-reviewed journal.

There is also an item called "Ulrich's Periodicals Directory" which will give you the information on whether a particular journal/magazine is "peer reviewed." Check with your library to see if you have this item.

Finally, some databases allow you to limit your search to only peer-reviewed journals. The information on whether an item is peer-reviewed is built into the database itself.
