Infected wisdom tooth: contagious?
No, infected teeth or gums are not contagious, especially since you're on antibiotics. You can still kiss your boyfriend, but you may want to use mouthwash to freshen your breath. I know when I had an infected tooth, it gave me a terrible taste in my mouth, so I rinsed it with Listerine to kill the germs and the bad taste.
Why do we have wisdom teeth?
Anthropologists believe wisdom teeth, or the third set of molars, were the evolutionary answer to our ancestor’s early diet of coarse, rough food – like leaves, roots, nuts and meats – which required more chewing power and resulted in excessive wear of the teeth. The modern diet with its softer foods, along with marvels of modern technologies such as forks, spoons and knives, has made the need for wisdom teeth nonexistent. As a result, evolutionary biologists now classify wisdom teeth as vestigial organs, or body parts that have become functionless due to evolution.Wisdom teeth, which begin forming around your tenth birthday, are the last set of molars on the tooth-development timeline, so they usually don’t erupt until you are between the ages of 17 and 25. Because this is the age that people are said to become wiser, the set of third molars has been nicknamed “wisdom teeth.”Some people never get wisdom teeth, but for those who do, the number may be anywhere from one to four – and, on very rare occasions, more than four, according to a study published in the Journal of the Canadian Dental Association. Scientific literature has yet to be able to explain why the number of teeth per individual varies, but for those who do get these extraneous, or supernumerary, teeth, it can lead to all sorts of problems. Are wisdom teeth useful for chewing food?
Wisdom teeth are a remnant of a past(~100 million years ago) where a third set of molars was required to offset the wear and tear of our ancestors’ teeth. Their diet consisted primarily of roots, leaves, nuts and tough meats, which are very coarse foods requiring a lot of chewing. Also their jaws were much larger, they were still running around on all fours and teeth were extremely important in grabbing, tearing, even dismembering prey. Wisdom teeth were sort of a backup set of molars that would appear sometime after they were 17 (life expectancy was barely above 30) to ensure that they did not starve to death because they could not chew their food anymore.Fast forward to now, where our diets consist primarily of much softer, cooked and processed foods - infact we don't need teeth at all. We have to get our wisdom teeth removed because our jaws have evolved and cannot fit in 32 teeth anymore. So, to answer your question, No. Unless you plan to stop brushing and live like a caveman you definitely don't need them for chewing food.
What are wisdom teeth, and why are they called that?
The eruption of the 3rd molar is usually between 17-25 years of age (with exceptions to every rule and many other factors that hamper the eruption). The linguists seemed to have thought this age is when maturity and wisdom is attained and hence the eruption of the teeth marks it. The jaws of our ancestors were much bigger, could accommodate all the teeth and were needed in chewing. It is more of a vestigial tooth now as the jaw size decreased and does not really help in the mastication. It usually erupts with a risk of being impacted or erupting in different directions hampering the position of other teeth. You can also call them 3rd molars.
How bad is wisdom teeth removal?
Hi…The placement of the wisdom tooth in the jawThe abnormalities in the alignment of the tooth with the jaw and its way of piercing into the gum determine the difficulty of the extraction process and may also impact wisdom teeth removal cost in Sydney. Generally, tooth that is leaning forward and upright is much easier to remove than the one that is tilted horizontally.Type of impaction An erupted tooth (the ones which have penetrated completely through the gums) is much easier to extract than an impacted one. Bony impactions (tooth that is partially or completely encased in jawbone) are more complex than the soft-tissue impactions. Wisdom teeth removal cost in Sydney will vary based on the problem and the type of impaction too.Depth of the toothThe depth of the wisdom tooth with respect to its neighbours (the second molars) is also used to estimate the difficulty level of the extraction process. When the tooth is positioned deeper, then the dentist is forced to remove more bone tissue. As a result, the surgical area has a larger wound and the healing process takes a much longer time. Also the chance of potential problems like dry socket, sinuses and damage to the nerves in the case of deeply rooted impacted wisdom teeth. All these factors ultimately shoot up the wisdom teeth removal Sydney cost for the patient. The anatomy of the root of wisdom toothThe wisdom tooth has multiple roots (2 or 3 based on its location) and these roots may be separate and distinct or fused together. The anatomy of the roots also determines the difficulty level of the extraction process. For instance, tooth with partially formed roots can be easily extracted and wisdom teeth removal cost in Sydney in this case is relatively low. Another important feature of the root is its curvature. If the curvature facilitates easy extraction then the process can be completed easily.Age of the patientAs the patient ages, the tooth becomes fully formed and extraction becomes difficult. Experts recommend patients to remove the wisdom tooth between the age of 18 and 25 as only two-thirds of the tooth is formed until then and manipulating the surgery is easier too.Visit the experienced wisdom teeth removal clinic in Sydney for detailed info.
How painful is a wisdom teeth removal?
It' a almost painless but probably a time consuming procedure. The population at large have misconceptions about keeping these teeth in mouth despite being in abnormal position. Even the dentists don't motivate and educate their patients to get them removed if they are not in normal functional position due to various professional reasons but the fact is that it's a vestigial organ and must be extracted if at abnormal position.
