Is This Against The Law

Is it true that it is against the law to put...?

pretzels in a bags in Philadelphia? I just heard this for the first time today and I cannot believe that this is even true. When I buy pretzels, they put them in a bag for me.

Why is it against the law to fall asleep in a bar?

It is not, actually. It is illegal to fall asleep at the bar, but not in a bar. So, if you fell like a nap, go to a table or a booth, tell the server bartender, your intention and with a good tip, you should have a nice nap.

This law dates to the post-prohibition days when the Justice Department was intent in trying to make sure folks knew the difference from a brothel and a bar, and it was important to protect female travellers from the "dangers" of sleeping in EITHER.

I have added a federal citation for you, although this is actually a state's rights issue today.

Interesting question. Why did you ask?

Is it against the law to get buried on a mountain?

Sometimes you need special permission to do this since there are risks to things like ground water and the likes, but generally you can be buried whereever you want as long as you get the right paperwork.

In the UK at least you can be buried under the patio for example, just most people who do that have been murdered.

Is it against the law to go to a cemetery at nighttime?

It actually IS against the law to enter cemeteries after dark or some other time, in many localities. It is not U.S. law, but there certainly are state or local laws against it. It is best to ask a cop before you try it.

Is it against the law to hit a person with glasses?

I think it's obvious you should be more specific. Easy answer: if you hit a person, it's assault and battery, which is illegal. But are you hitting a person who is wearing eyeglasses? If so, there is no extra penalty because the victim doesn't have 20/20 vision. If you are using eyeglasses to hit someone, you may need to consider upgrading your weapon. But the charge will probably remain the same. Maybe a little more ridicule. However, if you are hitting a victim with multiple glass beverage containers, that's taking it to another level. You could get assault with a deadly weapon for that one.

Is it against the law for children to not go to school in the UK?

Children above a certain age have to receive an "efficient full-time education" suitable to their age, ability and aptitude, and to any special educational needs they may have, but that education can be either by regular attendance at school or "otherwise" (the position in Scotland is pretty much the same as in England/Wales/Northern Ireland, although the language used in the legislation is slightly different). It's against the law for them not to get an education. It's not against the law for them to not go to school provided that they are being educated in some other fashion.

Is it against the law to flip off a police officer?

Aargh. I actually did this, recently. Much to my embarrassment. I was driving on the expressway for a four hour drive, with my cruise control set to five mph over the limit and listening to NPR. I’d been happily pulling over to the right for any drivers that wanted to pass, but this time, when I glanced in my rear-view mirror, a car had barreled up behind me and was so incredibly close that it would have rear-ended me if I’d even tapped my brakes. I was really frightened, and as soon as I could I pulled to the right. I gave a pretty laid-back three fingered salute as he was passing me. The unmarked car immediately turned on the sirens and pulled me over. The officer was pissed but under control. I apologized, saying I didn’t know he was a police officer and thought I was being tail-gated by an extremely aggressive driver causing a dangerous situation (which I was!). He let me go with a warning, but I’ve always wondered how he would have handled it if I’d been more confrontational and not a white woman in my 50’s driving an SUV. In general, I have a lot of respect for police officers and it was obviously stupid to flip off an aggressive driver. But in this case, the apologies should have gone both ways!
