In your opinion is there a right or wrong way...?

I must be the last person who should be answering this question because poems and I don't exactly "agree". However, in my opinion, there isn't a right or wrong way to write poetry.

I would have said otherwise a couple of days ago, but I ran into this poem in a magazine the other day. It was about sandals! It was more of a love poem, but the poet used sandals as a symbol, if you will. There wasn't much rhyme to it, but darn if it wasn't one of the best poems I've read. Comes to show, if your poem has enough "emotions" in it, then you won't NEED to follow the "rules".

If you're planning on writing poetry, then good luck! And have fun!

What did Rumi mean when he said: Beyond right and wrong there is a field. I will meet you there?

So here’s yet another Coleman Barks “translation” of Rumi that completely misses the Sufi mystic content that underpins all of Rumi's writing. Here's what Rozina Ali had to say about these lines —One of Barks’s popular renditions goes like this: “Out beyond ideas of rightdoing and wrongdoing, there is a field. / I will meet you there.” The original version makes no mention of “rightdoing” or “wrongdoing.” The words Rumi wrote were iman (“religion”) and kufr (“infidelity”). Imagine, then, a Muslim scholar saying that the basis of faith lies not in religious code but in an elevated space of compassion and love. What we, and perhaps many Muslim clerics, might consider radical today is an interpretation that Rumi put forward more than seven hundred years ago. That is — beyond both the practice of religious faith, and unbelief in these practices, there is a field where we will meet, united in (the Sufi concept of) universal love that erases all things and all people. This is not a universalist rejection of religious identity, but the opposite: a claim to the specifics of Sufism to reach this transcendent state.

What is the meaning of the quote, "Away beyond this world of right doing and wrong doing there is a field. I'll meet you there."?

It means that whatever your deeds are , whether they are going to hurt or heal someone , whether they are in favour of or plotting against somebody , whether you are not accountable for what you are doing , But beyond this universe/life there is a place(God`s court) where everybody is accountable & have to pay for his/her actions , I`ll see you there to balance the accounts of actions &deed ;):P

Who said these lines? "Away beyond all the concepts of wrong doing and right doing, there is a field. I will meet you there."

I was so fascinated when I heard this line from Ranbir Kapoor in a movie Rockstar. Later after a year, i was roaming around the Internet, and I found the same line by Rumi.Rumi's works are written mostly in Persian, but occasionally he also used Turkish, Arabic, and Cappadocian Greek in his verse. His Masnavi (Mathnawi), composed in Konya, is considered one of the greatest poems of the Persian language. His works are widely read today in their original language across Greater Iran and the Persian-speaking world. Translations of his works are very popular, most notably in Turkey, Azerbaijan, the United States, and South Asia. His poetry has influenced not only Persian literature, but also Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, Azerbaijani, as well as the literature of some other Turkic, Iranian, and Indo-Aryan languages including Chagatai, Urdu and Pashto.Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and right doing there is a field. I'll meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass the world is too full to talk about.Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.The wound is the place where the Light enters you.Let yourself be silently drawn by the stronger pull of what you really love.Lovers don't finally meet somewhere. They're in each other all along.Stop acting so small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion.Let the beauty we love be what we do.When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.The cure for pain is in the pain.If you are irritated by every rub, how will your mirror be polished?Reference:- Wikipedia

How do you know when you've written a good poem?

This is a great question McKenzie.  As with all important questions there is more than one answer.  I know I have written a good poem when it sings the song I felt when I conceived it.  A Second-level measure but not one that impacts the value of a piece to me is comprised of public response.   It is common for me to experience that those who have little response to what I consider a profound piece of work when reading it on my website have a much deeper and more profound response when I read the poem to them. I suspect a good deal of this has to do with facial expressions and body language that clarifies the meaning of the piece of work. generally when a piece I consider powerful is read by another poet the response is very positive.  I think the split consists of the fact that this is not the most introspective era of our history as a society and feelings, especially deep ones, are rarely explored especially in public exchanges. To sum it up I feel my way into it and if the emotional experience I had when I conceived the poem is re-created by it, then I know I have written a good poem.  I call my poems songs from the heart of life.  In truth they are actually songs and like those created by musicians some touch us deeply as humans and some miss the target.   I hope this answer is helpful to you.

What is wrong in the sentence, ‘I am reading a new poetry’?

Question : What is wrong in the sentence, ‘I am reading a new poetry’?Answer : A big error there is. “Poetry” is the art of composing poems i.e. prosody or versification. “Poetry” is composed. “Poetry” is a collection of poems. So, I would rather use, “I am reading a new book on poetry” i.e. I am reading a book which discusses the genre of poetry. I could also say that, “I am reading a new poetry book” i.e. I am reading a new collection of poems. Or simply, “I am reading a new collection of poems”.It is different from the novel. The novel is also known as fiction and we more often than not, use the expression, “I am reading/writing fiction”, instead of using the word “novel” but the same is not true for “poetry” and “poem(s)”.One of the finest poems on the importance of poetry, “Ars Poetica” by the Greek poet Horace, shall bestow more clarification.

Is my poem good or bad? What can I fix?

You're off to a good start!

What counts as a bad poem?

For a short poem (not an epic), lack of thematic unity and clunky, awkward language, or language inappropriate to the subject matter, all tend to lower the quality of the poem. Suppose Shakespeare had written:Shall I compare thee to a summer dayOr how about a Snap-On socket wench…The theme is of the actual poem is how his love is more gorgeous than a summer day. The theme of my hypothetical revision is… what? “Things I might compare my love to that have nothing to do with each other?” “Thoughts on fixing my car one summer day while thinking about you?”Likewise, the tone of the language changes between lines for no apparent reason, from Shakespearean to middle-American. That can be used for deliberate effect, but it’ll be apparent if it’s accidental and the result will be a less good poem. My example gets extra badness points for egregious product-placement, although Snap-On tools are really pretty awesome. Also, trite imagery/metaphor, inauthentic sentiments, overt moralization, poor use of metre, and weak rhythmicity are all common problems. I define poetry as “speech in which the rhythmical structure is more important than the grammatical structure” (others may differ, but I contend that whatever word you want to use for it, this definition calls out an important kind of verbal art) so rhythmicity on all scales is an important aspect of poetry in my view, and it is frequently given in sufficient attention.
